That's cool - looks like you had a soundman that knew how to deal with the full head /no mic hole presentation. Some sound guys are really uncomfortable with that. What a great sound that is, though I do have to fight a little beater bounce/flutter with no mic hole sometimes.

Is the kick mic a D6? More of a modern, scooped sound to that mic, but vey dependable/repeatable.

Posting here to remind me of this thread later. I've got a Saturn on the way with a 24" kick :-)

Should be here in a month or two. In the meantime, I'll just keep staring longingly at the DW kitbuilder image I made.

Love the pic guy's!

My only 24 is a late 70's Ludwig 3ply 14x24.
Love it, but my regular bass drums are 26's (16,18, 2-20" depth).

Personally, I'd not go smaller than a 24 on a kit. People like different things, so if something smaller works for someone else, great. For me, it's a 24 on up.

24" isn't that big, unless you're used to 18 & 20" kicks I guess!

I have a few, here's my touring kick:

It doesn't appear to be a 'big' drum, but it's overshadowed by a lot of stuff, and I sit a bit high.

Yes, that is a D6. A little TOO scooped for this particular application, maybe, but it worked. I have since gone to an internal shock mount for it, with an XLR plug in the shell, and it excels there. I strongly prefer not to port the head - I've tried it, and I just don't like the sound and feel when ported. I would do whatever the music demands, but I try to put myself in musical situations where the sound I like is what fits.

So, unported, 99% of the time.

Great looking kits, guys! Love the big kick drums!

A huge bonus I found with going from a 22" to a 24" kick was that by doing so I had to adjust my setup and my seat height. This changed my ergonomics significantly. When I play a 22", I sit really low...as low as the seat will go. My hips are usually lower than my knees. I'm 6'4", so the best explanation I can give was that I was trying to tuck myself into the drums.
But now, with even the small difference of 2", I've gone up to a seat height that makes my thigh parallel to the floor. This has effectively eliminated all of my lumbar [lower back] problems, as well as took a huge load off my shoulders. I'm more balanced, and my playing feels more balanced. I even get reserve power now, which I believe is from the seat height as well. My crash cymbals have been lowered in height by almost 3 inches. My floor toms are a good two inches taller than those on my 22" Slingerland kit.
I feel like the 24" fits my size better, a bit like a proper-fitting shoe. I now fit behind the kit like I should, instead of trying to shoehorn myself into a smaller kit, and feel like I can go 3x longer each time because of it. The bonus is the gut-punch that a 24" delivers.

Lol. Good job you didn't play an 18" bass drum, you'll be seating on the floor :))

With the exeption of my very first kit and my current set up (both 22"), all my kits had 24" bass drums.

This pic is a 1983 Tama Artstar shot during a gig in '87, 2 x 24"x16", 13"x12" & 14"13" rack toms, 18"x16" floor tom, and 14"x8" main snare (wood) & 14"x5" secondary snare (stainless steel)

I sit fairly high (after advice from my physical therapist). I also lean down the rack tom a little bit. Never been a problem once I got used to it.
