that book is so packed with knowledge it feels like it never ends ....Ill work on a chapter.....then after a few months I go back to that chapter and re work it again and learn more than I did the first time I agree.....I feel so amazing inside when I play the Jack and the Elvin transcriptions on that book. it fills me with joy and excitement every single time I feel like I will forever be working out of all 3 of Mr. Rileys books.....but especially Beyond Bop and Jazz Drummers Workshop they have opened my eyes to so many things and I am forever thankful that they exist

I remember that one, Num. Stylistically like Stuff but the drummer's more like Purdie than Gadd to my ear - funky guy. Inventive pianist.
YouTube just suggested this to me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HISo0r-UcI Never heard of Oliver Nelson until now but it's a big name lineup - the horns are magical.

I'm playing an arrangement of Blues and the Abstract Truth in a saxophone ensemble this semester, that opening line is so sick (and hard lol).

Good luck with that piece, Num. If you play it even half as tasty as Roy H it'll sound great.

What I love about the way Roy plays Stolen Moments is his pickup note with the brushes. We've talked about playing in the cracks between straight and swung 8th notes, but Roy goes to the other side and plays it like a dotted 8th note. It's very compressed and gives it a feel that contrasts beautifully with the very swung phrases the rest of the band are playing.

it gives that tension and release ...... similar to the little 16th note flutters you hear guys like Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette , Roy Haynes and the like play while comping

I actually don't understand why he played the pickup a bit straight. I think I would have preferred it swung more conventionally, though for all I know he might have tried full swing at first and found it didn't work as well. I loved his dynamics and eloquence, though.

I agree with Gvd's assessment: Tension and release. So, so, so important to the feel of the music. It takes a master with an appreciation for nuance like Roy to really play with that and know when it fits the bill. |

I was actually thinking of getting 'Drummers Workshop'. Can you tell me if it goes more in depth about 3/4 and 5/4 jazz drumming? I wanted to get a book that covered those topics, and I don't know if I should get that one or Steve Fidyks 'Jazz drum set independence'. |

How do you guys like Wynton Marsalis' Standard time album? I love their playing,
especially Jeff Tain Watts'. Just killing! Great polyrhythmic ideas. |

I have all those Standard Time albums. You want to hear some burning Jeff Watts with Wynton, be sure to check out Live at Blues Alley. Another killer collection of his is the Live at the Village Vanguard set with Herlin Riley.

Hey guys,
Been a while. Nice to see a "Jazz only" thread here. Good idea. I'm pretty much a Jazz guy these days, who's history mimics Gvdadrummasum's. I go about it a little differently, though. For starters I play Ludwig and Paiste, yet get some nice results. I play left footed, so I'm FOREVER transposing lessons, but after this much time, I'm used to it. Been watching some interesting vids on youtube lately. I especially like this one utilizing the paradiddle-diddle. Played a little differently than I remember, but it's been a while, so I'm obviously wrong. In other news, found this cool website. Also, bought a wonderful compilation album called "Arrival"... Features Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Ray Brown and Jake Hanna. It's a compilation of two live albums this group did, which were - Seven Come Eleven and Jazz Concord. Next purchases will be coated Weathermaster Heavy for the snare drum and VF AJ2 sticks. I wanna compare them to the 5a's I have now. That's about it from me! Elvis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeCth...eature=related paradiddle-diddle comes up a lot in jazz for me......for instance as an uptempo comp....putting it between the ride cymbal and snare drum .....starting it on 2 as Elvin often would and I must check out that recording.. Jake Hanna was such a beast

I can't watch YouTube vids through my work network, but I am with you on the use of paradiddle-diddle in jazz. That's a trick I learned for dealing with really fast tempos, like Max would play back with Clifford. It's a cool-sounding way to give your hands a bit of a break without disrupting the flow. Another one is doubles between ride and snare, inverting it and changing where it starts, etc. #survivaltactics

check out the video when you get home 8.....real nice use of the paradiddle-diddle it's nothing completely ground breaking ...but still really nice it's just putting the last left on your foot and putting the 6 note phrase in a 16th note subdivision so it gives an over the barline feel
