Over time I have tried to come up with some ways of dealing with bad bass players to sort of mitigate the damage. But the biggest thing as you point out is not to take full responsibility for a bass players short-comings. After that, I just try to make the music feel as good as I possibly can, but I would be curious to hear what you guys think about this issue. So the question is, how do you deal with a bad bass player on a gig?

Happy to hear someone heard of him. I found a few videos of him and I like his playing- very experimental and a nice groove on a china/pang cymbal.

As a former Trentonian, I am very partial to Trentons own Richie Cole and got to see him in small clubs like Lanzis Lounge and Joes Mill Hill...I feel blessed. ;) I just found this on Youtube and it's amazing, Richie with a quartet backing the greatest Jazz singer/scatter of all time Eddie Jefferson... it's din-o-mite! check it out

Great performance. Thanks for posting it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kafka, Somewhere I have an episode of the old PBS Jazz Masters series that features Richie Cole backing up Nancy Wilson. Really great stuff. Richie's always been an A-lister. That's a cool piece of footage you posted. Elvis

My primary stick is a Vic Firth 5A and my lighter stick is a VF AJ6. I also use the VF AJ2. And every once in a while I will break out the 5A nylon tip. I also use VF Heritage brushes as well as Regal Tip Jeff Hamilton brushes. BTW, thanks for the youtube link. |

That PE Ride Stick gives the most beautiful sound on the ride. Thanks. I may have to go pick up a couple more pair now... |

Vater 52nd street jazz hickory. It has a long narrow tip. Makes a lot of contact with the cymbal when played parralell to the cymbal for a nice braod clangy ride sound I love. When played at a slight angle it makes very little contact with the cymbal for a defined dry sound (like the Sweet Ride stick). Two distinct sounds from one stick.

Sticks:
Silverfox Bop Master - mix between a 5a and 7a great for riding! Silverfox 5A Silverfox 7A Brushes/rods: Silverfox Swiskas Silverfox Foxtail Silverfox Clawstix Silverfox Nitestalks Silverfox B.O.D.S I'm a proud Silverfox Endorser. I've played the Peter Erskine Model, The VF AJ series, If there is a jazz stick out there I've played it but I always come back to Silverfox. The one brush I really enjoyed was the Vic Firth Live Wires, it really brought out the sound. |

90% of my gigs are quiet and small group so I use VF AJ6 all the time for them...love that
stick! I've tried a lot of brushes but ended up using the Ed Thigpen model and added a rubber ball to the end of the stick (like some old Ludwigs had). These brushes are so versatile I can't imagine changing. I also use a nylon brush occasionally but usually only in the right hand with a Thigpen brush in the left. |

VF SD10. They are amazing. Switched to those after using Dejohnettes for a while and I am really happy w/ them.

I picked up a couple Ride Sticks the other day (thanks a lot, Anthony... :-) ...) and thought I would try the newer Big Band stick to see how it felt. For my hands, SO much better than the Ride Stick. The rebound feels so effortless and I feel like I don't have to work quite as hard as I do with the Ride Stick, or any of my other sticks for that matter. |

One thing I don't understand is that even though the Big Band stick is slightly larger than the Ride Stick, it feels so much lighter. I think that goes a long way towards making it easier to play with. |

I just put 'Nefertiti' on and I feel alive again. This piece really sums up my mental state most of the time. Angular, twisting, unpredictable but low key. Sometimes you just find music that speaks to you.
My, oh my...

it wasn't love at first sight they were on my doorstep when I got home late from lessons on thurs. night and my first impressions were....the bead is too big.... they were a bit on the light side and didn't give me quite the action that the little extra weight of the Ride stick gave me after using them on the kit at a rehearsal then at a jazz gig that consisted of mostly up tunes I fell in love . they really really stay on top and seem to respond really well to my slightest most delicate finger moves ...which surprised me because I didn't expect that bead to respond so delicately thank you for the recommendation

It looks like you discovered the same thing about the stick that I did... It doesn't seem that a stick that size would behave the way that it does. It's actually a little bigger than the Ride Stick but it feels lighter than even the 5As I had been using. Plus that tip design...it's so easy to play light or as hard as you need. It has a nice fat cross stick sound too. Glad you like it. |

Here's a cool clinic by Justin Faulkner I was watching yesterday. Although he starts with some general concepts, it eventually shifts focus to jazz playing, very interesting, I love his anecdotes about Branford.

Love this stick! It has transformed the sound of my cymbals. I can't believe the difference. They feel great, too. Only issue I have had is I'm dropping them quite a bit, but I'll get used to that soon enough. Thanks for the rec. |
