Default Vater Sticks

Anyone give me an opinion on Vater sticks. Im thinking about getting the Xtreme 5A Nylons. Ive heard Vater dont put a lot of lacquer on their sticks which is what I need as my hands sweat quite a bit when I play. I tried vic grip but with the sweat the grip was hindering me more than anything.

i've used a lot of sticks, and vater is the choice for me. i love the fusion (maple and hickory), 8a (hickory), stewart copeland signature, and the maple phat ride models. vater just makes a kickass stickÖ i sweat like crazy, and they go nowhere.

I've played just about every major brand at one point or another. I tried out Vater about 5 years ago and have been happy with them ever since. They have a feel and balance that suits me perfectly.

But what I or anyone else thinks is really a moot point. The only way you're gonna know is by getting a pair in your hands and trying them out. Never be afraid to experiment mate.

Vater isn't present in Rochester to any degree that I've noticed. So in those rare times that I'm looking at a new stick, it's Vic & Promark that I can look at. Availability is everything.

I've used Vater sticks before and they do make quality and durable sticks. But if you are having trouble gripping sticks due to sweaty hands I would recommend some Zildjian stick wax. I have been using it almost as long as I have been drumming and I almost can't play without it now. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/drums...46620000000000

I started drumming in '81 using Regal Tip, followed by ProMark for a couple years, then to Vic Firth for a long time, but I've been all Vater all the time for probably 20 years. Like someone else said, they kick ass. Vic Firths are still a close 2nd, though.

Weirdly, my experience duplicates MikeM's. Same brands, same order. I use Vater nylon-tip sugar maple now. They're perfect for me. Highly recommended.

The beat goes on.

I love Vater sticks, but they tend to break and chip for me very easily, probably because I use a lot of shots in my playing and hit pretty hard. My pick would be the Super Jazz sticks

Their good sticks but personally I prefer the unvarnished Vic Firth american classics. Like you I also do not care for the Vic grip, just the plain unvarnished stick will do.

I bought a bunch of Vater sticks years ago when the regular 5A was called the Los Angeles model, and I like them. They feel pretty good. Although I tend to go back and forth between these Vaters and Vic Firth 5A's, which seem a little 'weightier' to me. But I use both, and like the Vaters enough to use them all the time.

I switched to Vater this year from Vic Firth.

I find them a lot more durable than the VFs. I use to always chew up the tips of my VFs but since moving over Vater there has been no wear on the tips and the sticks last 2, maybe 3 times as long.

gotta go with Vic

I've had way too many inconsistent pairs of Vater to say anything good about them

same with Pro Mark, Regal, and Zildjian

never anything but perfection from Vic Firth every single time

A few years back when I decided to change sticks I bought multiple models from multiple manufacturers. The Vaterís all seemed somehow cheaply made. The wood grain all tended to the wide side (which means shorter life of the stick), and the lathing seemed less precise than other brands. Dunno if I just got the lemons (although I selected carefully), but that experience put me off Vater.

watch the Vic Firth factory tour videos on YouTube and you may never touch another piece of wood

the extra steps they take at the very beginning of the stick making process that no other companies apply to their system puts them light years ahead of any stick manufacturer

Vic Firths 6th step is every other companies first step.... literally

and the final product is far superior to any other

nothing touches Vic

not even close in my opinion

here is part one

Yeah, Iíve watched all that stuff. Iím always interested in the production process of all things drum.

In my quest for a new stick I did indeed end up with Vic Firths. I thought they were great--and they certainly are as far as feel, ride sound, etc.--but I recently joined a fairly heavy band where Iím hitting quite a bit harder than my recent norm, and I find the Vicís are snapping crazy fast. Itís annoying (and expensive), but they remain my stick of choice. (For now.)

Wouldnít that be completely dependent on the lathing process? As in primarily determined by where the taper starts?

It part of the journey ...to try them all til you find your 'fit'. I've ended up at Vater - Stew Copelands, Fusions or Manhattans. Vater hickory is the densest, though Firth's is nice ( and Pro Marks 5A's too, but they are kinda light, and don't last as long.

I prefer Vater the most. I like the H220, Fusion, and 5A models. I will use others from time to time, but I always come back to them. Peace, love, and blues.

so a bent stick is fine as long as it lasts long?

in every single brick of Vater and Pro Mark sticks I have ever bought there has been at least one that wouldn't roll

not a good look in my opinion

never once happened with a Vic

I love Vater 5B's! I find them the perfect stick for my hands, and find they are reliable, straight, powerful, and long lasting. I've been using Vater for over six years, and haven't found anything better.

I prefer the feel of Vater Power 5Bs to V.F. Extreme 5Bs. I do find the occasional warped stick, though.

Right now,I am playing Zildjians.I was given several bricks by a friend. I like the feel and they are surprisingly straight. I can remember when there were more warped Zildjian sticks than straight ones.

I actually like the feel of Zildjian sticks.
its just that the last time I had a brick there were about 5 straight sticks in it

Zildjian might have a new convert. With my luck, they will go back to looking like boomerangs,as soon as I actually have to pay for them.

Ive literally used hundreds, maybe thousands of Vater sticks and Ive never had ANY issue with bent/curved/out of round ever. They are always consistent.

Having not gigged extensively since "converting" to Vater sticks, I really haven't been through enough of them to be able to make a definitive claim based on using large numbers. But with what I have been through, I've never found a bent stick. To put it in context, I don't buy bricks as I don't churn through sticks quickly enough to bother anymore. But I was brought up to roll every single stick I ever buy. To date, I've never had to lay a Vater stick aside......they've all been straight.
Although I've probably used more VF, Pro-Mark and possibly even Zildjian sticks (my least favourite) in my time......I can't say the same for any of them.

This is kind of an FYI. I stopped by my local Guitar Center today and they had pairs of Vater 5A Wood Tip Specials on sale for $3 for Father's Day. I have never played them before, but I really like them. I bought 2 pair and I might get a couple more while they are still on sale. I didn't ask if this was a nationwide sale, but most GC sales usually are, so you all might want to check it out.

Just got the Vater 8A instead of the 7A, in sugar maple. These are slightly thicker than the 7A, which compensates for the light weight of maple. I love them, they are the perfect pair for me (pair of sticks I mean...)

I've been using power 5b's and the difference between these and the Vic firths i was using prior is that I'm not splintering the tips or splintering where I rimshot, they just get a bit warped after a while until they're not nice to play anymore and then I get a fresh set. They're pretty damn durable.

Def a good brand!

I have been using the Vater New Orleans model stick for a few years now and it is stellar. The stick is slightly narrower than a 5A, which I love. I used Vics for years, but nothing feels as good to me as the Vaters.
