Default unusual MIDI latency issue

Running MIDI controller through AudioBox iTwo, and finding major latency problems. Here's the setup:

Roland TDW-1 drum module - MIDI out
to Presonus AudioBox iTwo MIDI in
AudioBox USB out to MacBook Pro

Audio output device is AudioBox iTwo

Running MIDI controller for various drum sample VST libraries, running through MainStage 3 plugins and/or stand alone/3rd party VST players (ie. Toontrack player)

MacBook specs:
Core 2 Duo
8GB Ram
512GB SSD

I'm experiencing major latency running the MIDI through the audio box. The module itself is older and has no USB out, so I'm stuck there. My only solution is to run the module through a Roland UM-1 USB/MIDI converter cable. Works like a charm. But I still need to run audio output through the Audiobox for live performance. Would be GREAT if I could run everything through the audio box to free up my second USB port.

Through the audio box, the drums won't trigger consistently or reliably, and are choppy at best. Through the UM-1, it's golden. I would have figured a product like this interface would work as well if not better than a small converter cable...perhaps this is a firmware fix that needs addressing?

We tried the same cable track on a PC running Toontrack - same issue. I even tried swapping the MIDI cable, but no dice. Perhaps it's a setting?

Any thoughts on this from anyone? The issue is not pressing per se, as we have a solution with the UM-1, but addressing this problem would certainly be convenient.

Cheers

I would check Presonus for updated drivers and or delete and re-install.
I have heard Presonus does not always have the best drivers.
Does your setup involve Asio at all? You might try using it if not.
I run PC and have limited experience with Mac's.
Good luck.

I've found most modern computers process audio much, much faster than midi.

If I'm reading this right, you hit a pad, the signal goes to the Roland, to the Presonus, to the computer, and then from the computer back to the Presonus.

That's a long chain for live use.

Yes I realize this now. Will be going direct to laptop, and USB audio out to the presonus only.
