Default How I'm rolling my Starclassics now...

Ever buy a new kit and just subtract drums after a while? I've done it. My new Starclassic black oyster kit came in a two-up, one-down configuration, which I love too. But my roots keep calling me back to a one-up, one-down set-up. I even went to the store today and got a regular die cast hoop for my 12" tom (because the Starclassic batter hoop has the floating mount with the bracket on it - it's easier to just change the whole thing rather than dismantle the rim mount and/or leave it there - I wanted to cut the weight a bit too). Add in a snare stand to hold the 12" tom and the kit is now stylin' as a 4-piece! I'm debating removing the bass drum mount as well since there is no big hole for the tom mount, just four small screws holding the base plate on it. I could easily get black plastic bolts and no one would even notice. I'll love this until I feel my 10" tom getting lonely ;)

I'd rather a 10 as my rack tom, 14 as floor tom personally. I know everyone likes the 12 + 16 thing but I always found smaller drums to be alot neater, and they can be tuned low enough for my taste.

They look great, its kinda like that kit is calling out to be a 4 piece. I think you have one of my favorite drumsets based on looks and sound (assuming yours sounds like all B/Bs).

Hmm. I'm curious to know what all B/Bs sound like ;)

I got mine singing pretty good, and although a slightly different sound from my old bubinga elites (which I no longer have, sorry Jofizzm) I think I like these a bit more, they seem to resonate longer and my bass drum, with a full reso head and nothing in it, is shaking the walls in my drum room, very cool.

I'm posting some beats up in the "Your Playing" section right now.

Not sure I'd need the plate as there is no big hole for my base plate mount. The tom mount merely sits in the hole, and only four little screws are holding the base plate to the shell. I took the screws out of the base mount, but the tom mount refused to easily come off of the drum. Rather than damage it, I just put the screws back in. For all I know, Tama could've glued the mount down in place too. Anyone have any ideas about that? Mine won't budge at all without the screws....

DW hasn't already started doing stuff like this? I figured they'd be one of the first since they're customers would gladly pay more for their kits so DW could experiment with this type of finish. No?

I was making a joke.., My point was that this is quite a cool thing that Tama has done with this lacquer IMO., and hardly anybody notices or says anything.. but if it were dw.. well.. what sort of response do you think you might see ??

I don't think Bo is ever going to stop buying drums until he finally gets a right-hand set.

It could be something in the spring air. I had the notion to store my 10" tom last week. I like having that voice on the kit, but I want to play a 1 up for awhile.

I really have no idea why... I don't even think I'm "right" in any sense, but I've always thought 1 up 1 down is both the most aesthetically pleasing and the most comfortable to play. Everything has it's place, and it's all close and easy to get to.

Your kit is looking real nice in that con-fig. Much better to my eye.

I play a 4 piece most of the time so my 10" tom spends most of its time in the closet. Though I don't like using a snare stand for the rack tom. I like my tom further to the right and higher so I clamp it on a cymbal stand. (my kick is virgin)

I thought about doing that too but I had learned over the years every time I have a stand dedicated to holding two or more things, the set-up time at the gig seems to quadruple on me! The simplicity of a snare stand for the tom, and a dedicated stand for everything else makes life so much easier when you have to cart it around from place-to-place.

I know where you're coming from but I like my stands to do at least double duty. One stand has splash/crash/tom. The other, ride/crash. Then one crash or china alone (an exception) on the far right. I find it easy and efficient. When I'm not using my rack, that is.

I managed to finally get my tom mount base plate off of the bass drum. I thought it was probably glued on there since it wouldn't budge even after I took the screws out. I ended up taking a putty knife and gently getting underneath the plate to lift it off. Then it popped off! I think when it was made, the lacquer finish wasn't quite dry in a couple of the corners, and some of the lacquer did come off. I was angry at first, but when I put the chrome through-bolts in the holes, the washers I added covered the blank lacquer spot well. And when I decide to go back to using two rack toms, it will be completely covered anyway.

Here's another brave thing I started doing to: I'm rolling WITHOUT any crash cymbals! I went to a band rehearsal a few days ago and brought the four-piece kit as it was, but only decided to use my 20" K Custom Dark Ride as my only cymbal in addition to the hi-hats. It was refreshing not having a couple of crashes, and more refreshing that I didn't notice the absence, nor did the band. That K is pretty dang versatile if you ask me.

This kit came with a 1 inch downtube tom mount.
I wanted a classic rail mount for the tom so I added the rail mount.
I removed the stock 1 inch tom mount and I installed a 7/8 inch Pearl style receiver to accept a cymbal arm for a splash.
If you look closely you can see the black plastic automotive body rivets that cover the holes for the old mount.
I saved the O. E. tom mount. If I ever sell the kit I will reinstall it and it will cover the holes for the Pearl receiver.

Nice kit Bo!

Love the kit Bo. Looks great. I love 1 and 2 cymbal set ups too. 4 piece kits are very fun to play and easy to cart around....I just can't give up my 3 floor toms (yet) haha!

Bob's solution is cool too. I always liked rail mounts, and the new ones are so much sturdier. That Mapex finish is great.

I've been telling myself that for years ;)

I'm actually really happy I forced myself to go with the one cymbal though. I tested it out with Bermuda's band at my first rehearsal with them and it worked out. You know how you get so used to having that extra something there? Then you take it away? Oh the anxiety!
But the reality is that this is just like when I was a kid and slowly collecting the proper pieces. It's like going back home, but further ;)
