Xero, I should comment on each one, but "out of time" was some nice random stuff with plenty of snare drums. I really enjoyed that one.

Aydee, I was really liking your snare work. Nice grooves and nice touch all around.

Thard, you shred. Like a blast from the past.

Thanks Mary, Naw, thats all just noise. What you were doing and trying to do in yours is the real thing. If you get good at thats where you want to be! Those legs belong to Leo. He and I do this awesome double bass number from oppisite sides of the bass drum. : )

Well, I'll admit some of that was intentional. Poking s little fun at the 'groove is king' theory by going as fast as I could go ( still not as fast as thaardy.. )

The OP finally! : ) Nice sound you get out of your kit, bud. I liked the machine gun bass drums. Ya would be interesting you see you really develop this idea into a solo. I think it could be really interesting.

Haha, nice one Abe. That's a real nice kit you have there!
Some nice triplets, quads and buzzrolls there! Have you tried slapping your drums a bit harder? It would make your solo really fierce(though it may be the camera that messes with the dynamics)!
I also hear some Mike Clark in your playing.

I will apologize up front for the sound quality. You can only get so much out of a $10 RockBand microphone.

No structure or anything, this was literally me hopping on my kit for two takes and then jumping off because it was getting late and I have an agreement with my neighbors about noise (in fact, I call the second solo "Out of Time" because I was literally hurrying the hell up to finish) :/

I'll probably do another more structured and thought-out solo, but for now here they are:

Xero Talent's Solo
"Machine Gun" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEoCQUv1Q1o
Built around a simple 16th note double-bass riff.

"Out of Time" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0ISxfS9GF8
????

As you can probably tell, I don't solo much....................

.... and yes, I make ridiculous faces.
Cool stuff man. I liked the out of time-solo the most. It reminded me of Ginger Baker with some tribal'ish beats and some syncopated stuff.
Also, did you play for AC/DC a while back? ;)

Thanks, glad you laughed, Thaardy. That was the idea. You are right, I was playing softer because I thought the camera mic would clip if it was louder. I was kinda tapping the cymbals too instead of hitting them for the same reason.

The drums are great,,, Im not sure if I like the coated Evens G2s though... they sing a lot more with the clears..

Thats a yup on Mike Clark. man, you guys are stripping me naked! : )

@Aydee- Really liked your solo! Very tasteful. Because I didn't see a face, I have to ask, are you sure that wasn't Gadd playing that? :)

@Xero Talent- Very cool! I especially liked the triplets toward the end of "Machine Gun". How I wish I could play those! Thanks for starting this cool thread!

Lol, ya I pretty sure he isnt me though I wish he was! Gadd was such an influence & a game changer specially to my generation that you'll probably hear him in most of us 50 yrs olds.

PS- and apologies for missing yours. Its getting a little messy on this thread, though Xero and Polly have jumped in with some housekeeping.

That was wonderfully musical. Im loving the tom solos on this thread.. so refreshing. I loved your tone, your control with very nice dynamics, and dayum, yes a melody, folks! Very nice playing, sir!

Wow! Ok, I'm in catch up mode. First off, a confession:

Yesterday, I had 10 minutes spare before packing up for practice, so I tried to knock out a kick & snare solo. What a total disaster. I knew it would be difficult for me, as I've never even attempted a solo before, but it was beyond difficult. In short, I failed miserably. I play music with a limited box of tools. That's it, that's me, yet I will not let this defeat me. I will return to this :)

Abe - superb stuff. Such a deft touch & a sensibility that places a veil over your skills, but allows just a glimpse of the world of textures that lies within. Verdict = far too good = banned!

Ok, reprieve, for having the coolest automatically extending bass drum spurs with pads & claws ;)

Thaard = banned, then banished!

Mary - getting there girl, big time :) = promoted.

Xero - for crimes appertaining to overtly sporty & over cool drummer attire = banned!

midnight - for services to stadiumism, superb use of natural reverb, & generally great tom thumping = promoted.

Machine - for blatantly flouting thread rules (total of 2 minutes + 3 seconds of playing), & hitting multiple percussion objects as often as possible = promoted.

Gvdadrummasum - for deliberately under stating your skills = almost banned, only your lovely cymbal work saved you this time :)

8mile - for being a generally skilful 'stard, & playing stuff that's beyond my level of understanding = banned :)

Xero,

dont know where you got the inspiration for this thread but wow. Been hesitating to put up my two minutes because, well I suck. Good attitude, nice to people, don't litter but my drumming.....

Well this ain't a thread on Littering, Being Nice and Attitude. So tomorrow night, I have a plan to sit with a drum friend, eat a little salmon dinner and get some pointers. Hopefully I will have a You Tuber in the next day or so.

Mary is my inspiration.

As are you all.

This is an awesome thread, there is some great playing, creativity, and a good vibe all around!! Makes me think that one of the coolest things about being a drummer is communicating with other drummers - we are generally a nice bunch! :-)

I recorded something for the thread on my new set, and will upload as soon as possible. (Need a better internet connection. I'll also check out some more of the videos, the connection now won't even let me do that. But I can read the thread, and it's great! :-)

Keep rockin' (or swinging' as the case may be :-)

Cheers Thaardy, I saw Zappa on his Bongo Fury tour. I was young and into chops and Terry Bozzio blew me away. But the decade I spent away from music affected me. I'm now less inclined to cut slack just because it's a drum solo.

I want to hear music, not just drummy stuff. I get bored - I need something to latch on to. To my ear, the earlier solo of yours was expressive - it spoke to me but the solo you did for this thread was merely impressive ... a display of the tools you have at your disposal when playing music.

Probably true. I was listening to tons of great drummers but SG's tracks kept standing out to me. I can still remember first being amazed by those ride bell accents in Stanley Clarke's Silly Putty groove: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXsZVs1EEfw

No probs, G. I had the time. Caring for an old person is a bit like being a firefighter - you need to be ready for battle stations at any moment but there's plenty of down time.

Because you're trying to play a choppy solo? Andy, I think you would be more true to yourself to go for a musical solo. You have good chops but you're not a chopmeister (hardly Robinson Crusoe there). You don't have to do anything flash that feels uncomfortable or daunting.

Look at Grunt's and Fixxer's solos - they're just singing on the drums. I relate to that - when you have a voice like mine, there's little choice but to do all your singing on drums ... if I had a dollar for every time someone said to me, "Grea, as a singer you make a good drummer" I'd have ... ummm, maybe $15 or so :)

No Pol, not even remotely choppy. I tried a few simple pieces strung together. Intro, middle, & end sections. Epic fail, & I mean truly pathetic. Give me music, & a thousand ideas come into my head. Give me emptiness, & my brain returns in kind. I guess I don't inspire myself.

That said, I did give it a massive 10 minutes of my precious time ;) so what do you expect from a virgin soloist?

I relate to this. I need input from others too. You're a song guy so all I can suggest is to start with a piece of a song and see where that takes you.

Grunt worked on Sandy Nelson's themes (though it still reminds me of Little B). I started with Shave and a Haircut. G-alphabet's solo was based his on Dizzy Gillespie's Salt Peanuts (showing you can base it on a melody instead of a beat too).

The world is your slimy mollusc!

Wow, I'm so honored! Can't wait to hear your solo, too. I know it will be great!

Thats a great observation, and I agree. This thread really defines all that is good about this forum. Looking forward to hearing you play, Ami.

What I really like about this thread is that it has a " this is me" vibe rather than " look at what I can do" vibe. Its almost an introduction to each other via the drumset. I think that is what Xero meant when he started this thread. The " solo" bit is a misnomer- its just that its nice to hear each other play.. whatever. Enjoy the salmon and have fun with the drums.

I'm going to remember that. Having the right attitude is half the battle IMO. You'd think having your head screwed on right would be the most natural thing in the world, but with the world's many complications at times sanity can feel as hard to grasp as soap in a bath.

A good dog! When Dad was away and I could drum at home but sometimes I'd be lumbered with the nephew's dog. The first thump and she's in a panic. And she absolutely HATES the didgeridoo (which I occasionally mess with). She starts barking and attacking the noisy end.

True. For instance, I had no idea of the wild and crazy guy lurking beneath Xero's intelligent, refined online demeanour - that was a fun revelation :)

Bit bummed that all I could do was a piddly bongo thang. So to make up for it here is a gift for you all, something to make you all feel great about your playing! It's yours truly as a teen in 1977, having played for about 2 years. Fittingly, the song was named Flubb :)

That was superb, Ami. It had everything from polyrhythms, toms, latin, groove, to some very tight chops, and yet it was a single musical statement. Very nicely played!

Ami, it didn't meet my expectations = sorry :(

It exceeded them by a mile :) :) :) Curses to you & your fantastic talent = oh so banned!!!!! ;) ;) ;)

Seriously, as Abe said, that piece just had everything in it of me. I love the characterful deliberate drags used as expression, just great. As a minor distraction, your drums were sounding really nice, really!

I've listened to that solo at least 5 times already this morning = delicious :)

That was amazing! I, too, liked the Latin flair it had to it.

Quality drumming, Ami, as expected. Especially liked the tom passage in the intro - very tasty and lovely sounding toms!

There are some really good solos here. At this point, Ami's is my favourite. Especially after you get the groove going and the way you blend the strokes on the toms. It is really groovy and reminds me of Hilary Jones's playing. Also up there is Aydee (I can't believe your dog just lays there during the solo) and Thaard's solo. It is great hearing such a variety of styles in the whole list there.
Hopefully I can contribute a worthwhile solo as well before this thread fades away. Drum solos are something I have always been relucant to do. I think it is a self confidence thing. I have no problems laying down a groove with the band, but tend to tense up if faced with a solo or just say no thanks. I have a Zoom H4n recorder but I'm not quite sure how to put a recording on youtube. I could maybe use my e-kit. Its a Yammy dtxetreme 111,and I am sure I can record from the module. I haven't tried it yet though. I will also try using the Zoom recorder on the Le Soprano kit.

Very cool, I really like the dynamics of your piece. Lots of very nice accenting, and my favorite part were those finale hertas around the toms at the end. Awesome.

Thanks LB, c'mon down. : ) It might help not to think of it as a solo. It'll be cool to lay down just a groove too - Its a sharing thing going on here.

Leo.. yea, he's a scream. There no other place in the world he'd rather be than next to the bass drum or an amp.

Thanks

that was absolutely beautiful

fantastic touch and flow , sparkling odd grooves with super clean grace notes, some... what sounded like afro cuba 5/8 and 6/8?, some thunderous hertas there at the end

I hear Elvin, I hear Tony, I hear Gadd, I hear Vinnie

you may not even dig any of those cats for all I know, but thats what I hear

wonderful mixture

Im inspired

makes me want to re do mine and actually put some thought into it

Andy, thanks a lot for these kind words, I am really glad you enjoyed it and like the sound of these drums as well!

This set is nearly finished (I have not done the finish yet) and I can't wait to have it ready, so I can actually show it to you guys :-)
