Default Yamaha 9000 - replacement spurs

I'm asking on behalf of a friend with a 9000 kit. His spurs look just like those on this kit:

And it's the exact same sizes and looks just like the one in this thread (not sure what his model numbers are): http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=48547

The telescoping legs slip while playing, but the rest of the spur assembly is fine. He's thinking he'll have to replace them with something modern. Of course we'd rather he didn't have to drill the shell, so does anyone know if matching spurs/legs can be bought anywhere?

If they can be reconditioned/repaired then that's an option too. Hope someone can help!

The bottom part of leg spurs are slipping into the top piece? If that's the case it would take all of 15 minutes to drill and tap an extra hole for another set screw or 2.

You can also look on ebay…I've seen yamaha replacement spurs on there from time to time…there's two left hand ones right now..One of the sellers may be a regular store as well... I'm sure they could order a right hand one if they don't have it

Thanks guys, good to know they are at least available. I read somewhere that the more recent recording custom has the same (close enough) spur, is that true?

I don't have the the drum nearby so I can't look at it to see what you mean. Would this mean the leg is permanently fixed at one length?

As far as I know, Yamaha still makes and uses those spurs. And you'll find them on the Oak and Maple Customs, as well .... and maybe others.

Quick fix for slipping spurs... get a small diameter hose clip from a hardware store. This will butt up against the hollow tube and stop the slippage from happening.

Word. My first RC kit back in the 80's had those spurs, and they didn't hold well. That's exactly what I did. Got some hose clamps on those babies and they were good to go. A lot cheaper than buying new spurs, but the latest model spur should fit the same bracket mount, if your friend chooses to replace them.

Those older spurs are no longer used. They had a cylinder that you twisted to set the height, rather than a drum key set screw. It was a poor design and you couldn't really get them tight no matter what you did. Yamaha switched to the set screw, I want to say around 1984. Good decision...

Indeed, I learn something every day, and I stand corrected. Both my RC's were/are post '84 .... I see the difference, now. Went into the basement and looked at the spurs on my RC, and yup, set screw ... but it looks like the "new" style would bolt right up to the "old" style. Is that true?

Yes, the new spurs will work with the old brackets. But, a set of hose clamps would be the cheap solution (less than $10 for the 2?) and will hold the bottom section of the slipping spurs in place. No one would ever notice...

Awesome I wasn't expecting it to be this easy! The hose clip idea is good but I think he's looking for a long term solution. I'll see if we can order some newer spurs from the dealer here.

thanks guys.
