The tama snare.

I've been looking for a new main snare, which had to be as versatile as possible, because I do a fair bit of recordings in a wide variety of styles.
Being a bit bored of the 14" I opted for a deep 13", for better attack, but with body.
I also fancied me some wood hoops, to take a bit of ring off the snare, and for that killer cross stick sound.
So, specs:

Tama Metalworks 13x6.3
Evans Reverse Dot on top
Evans 300 on the bottom
20 Strand
Hide-a-head wood hoops

I havn't even played this snare yet, so the jury is still out on whether im going to let the weans I teach use it. The hoops (to slip momentarily into my native tongue) were a wee bit shite. They were tight on the snare cord, but a file and 15 minutes of graft fixed that.

Its Tama's thicker (aye right) 1.2mm steel shell, with a brushed nickel finish.

Ive not played it out yet, but im going to the studio in about an hour, so im going to do an A\B with the wood\metal hoops then, and i will be sure to get back to you.

Maybe its the pics, but it looks like the hoops are even with the bearing edge, or maybe even lower. Seems like the sticks would be hitting the bearing edge on crosssticks/rimshots?

They are low hoops, the profile is very low, but there is still clearance between the hoop and the bearing edge.

Oh, and the post-studio update: this is a really good snare. Its build quality is solid, even the tension rods are sturdy. Sound wise, its versatile as expected. It sounded good at low, medium and high tunings, and it excelled at medium.
I jammed it through some songs, and let a student try it for a blues number so I could hear it in the room, and its a LOUD snare, like nothing I have ever heard before.

Glad it worked out for you! Did the wood hoops change the sound at all, or did you not get a chance to really try it with the steel hoops on.

The steel hoops made the sound more focused and sharp. The wood hoops gave a warmer, more rounded sound. The wood hoops also added substantial dampening to the snare, particularly at low tuning.

PS: I was serious about the couch though, it's awesome. Haha. :D

This chair is one of my faviourite things in the world. Its a 60-70 year old Chesterfield tub chair in oxblood leather. I got it for £50 from a fellow who was moving himself and his family to Australia. It was his mother-in-laws chair for guest use in thier home LIBRARY (read: rich) and it hadnt been sat in for around 40 years. Its the only non-ikea thing in my flat.
