Default What snare drum is the drummer in this video using?

Can someone tell me what snare drum is the drummer in this video using?

It kinda looks like a Ludwig Supraphonic but at the same time, it looks like it could resemble one of Yamaha's metal drums, please help me figure out.

Another thing... if you could tell me what kind of metal that you think the drum is made out of, that too would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and here is the link below.

Almost 100% positive that it's a six and a half by fourteen inch Ludwig Super-Sensitive snare with an aluminum shell. A classic instrument in the snare drum world.

Looks and sounds like one. Great pop, bright, dry, articulate... LM411

Super-Sensitive Aluminum?
Is it chrome plated aluminum or just aluminum?
What the difference between Super-Sensitive and Supraphonic?
Sorry for my confusion guys, for some reason I never heard of it untill now.

Super sensitive and supra phonic are names of strainer/throw off systems. Supraphonic is also the name of their chrome over aluminum snare. Suoraphonics are one of the most recorded snares. I'm not an expert on the super sensitive but its really a crazy looking throw off system. I do believe it brings the strainer up evenly on both sides where as a normal throw off pulls to one side.

The snare in that video looks like chrome over aluminum, but it could conceivably be chrome over brass. "Super sensitive" (or SS for short) and "Supra" only refer to the type of snare wire throw-off mechanism used. The SS uses a parallel action setup the keeps the same tension on the wires even when they are off, whereas the Supra wires just goes slack like on most other drums.

The shell is really independent of all that, but when people say "Supra" they almost always mean chrome over aluminum with a P-85 strainer (not SS). You could call a Black Beauty with a standard P-85 strainer a Supra, but most people will think you're crazy. To get even more ambiguous, when you upgrade to the P-86 strainer is it still a Supra? (I would argue that it is.) Ludwig didn't make things easy when they let their marketing people run amok with terms relating to snare strainers and shell materials. It's all very uncoordinated and confusing.

Many people prefer to just use the model number to clear up any confusion. For example, the 6.5x14 chrome over aluminum Supra is just an LM402. The LM400 is the 5" deep model. LM402T has tube lugs. LM402K has a hammered shell. LM402KT has a hammered shell and tube lugs. Black Beauty (black nickel over brass) 6.5x14 smooth shell with Imperial lugs would be an LB417 ... you get the idea.

Anyway, I think the drum in that video, in all likelihood, is an LM411

Yes, chrome over aluminium....just like the Supraphonic. Exactly the same shell. Just different snare mechanisms.

In my world....yes.

"Supraphonic", refers to the entire snare mechanism as opposed to just the strainer. So a P-83, P-85 or P-86 is still part of that mechanism. Basically, Ludwig offer two types of snare mechanisms....if it ain't a Supersensititve, then it's a Supraphonic.

Hell, if Ludwig won't use sound logic to simplify this, then by christ I will. ;-)

So, it’s all about the kind of snare strainer they use that determines whether or not a Ludwig snare is an SS or Supra-Phonic? But you also said that people refer to chrome plated aluminum snares as “Supras” and yet the SS comes in chrome plated aluminum as well, so… I’m guessing that it’s mainly all about the snare strainer, right?

LM400's and LM402's were the original Supraphonics that started production in 1963, replacing the original chrome over brass shells.....hence why they are the drum that people "usually" think of when they hear the word Supra.

If a shell has a Supersensitive snare mechanism it is not a Supraphonic....even though they share the exact same shell. Clear as mud?
