So, I just pulled the trigger on a Premier kit. It's a Baron, shows up in the 1975 Premier catalog, a 24 inch kick ... 13, 14, 15, 16, concert toms ... and a 18 inch floor tom. Birch shells with reinforcement rings. Picture shows the kit (catalog photo), but mine will be natural wood finish. Anyone know anything more about this kit/these drums ? Anyone ever owned one of these, or played one ?

Although this won't be of any use to you Harry, but I'm pretty sure I played one around 1977. It belonged to a drummer friend of mine. I remember being attracted to the wonderful lug shape. TBH, I can't remember anything about the sound. Good catch though mate, where did you find it?
Birch, concert toms, it's going to be loud :) |

Scored it off of eBay. I'll be the 3rd owned. Yeah for loud drums. And big. Love the sizes, with the smallest drum starting at 13". It fulfills several "holes" in my collection. My first kit, with reinforcement rings. A 24" kick ( I have a 20, 22, and 26) ... and I've never owned a Premier kit, before. $970, landed. At first, my plan was to "double - head" one of the rack toms, but then I found out that the two headed rack toms used a different, hi-tension lug. Like what's on the bass drum. Only the concert toms came with the cool art deco split lugs ... and the floor toms. So, I think I'll leave alone, the concert tom heard. Look for a proper "matching" two headed rack tom ... or buy a wrapped one and make it match.

Can you post pics of your kit? I'm really interested in these Premier concert toms and would love to see the kit.

I used to play a Premier Elite, which was the double headed version of this kit. It will sound great, really punchy and focused. I would use coated ambassadors on the toms by preference.

It's on the right rear corner. Did you say "spare", or "snare" ?

I remember drooling over that 1975 Premier Catalog as a youngster. That blue Baron outfit was definitely one of the dream kits for me even though I had never seen one in person and still haven't to this day. I am in the process of rehabbing my first Premier Kit which is an early-mid 70's mahogany shelled kit that needs a new wrap.
I would love to see pictures of your kit Harry. |
