Default PolyNome: the drummer's metronome app -- NOW AVAILABLE

I've been collaborating with Joe Crabtree on a project that's just about ready for release, so I wanted to make a pre-announcement here as I think there are a lot of folks that might be interested.

PolyNome is a metronome for your iPhone/iPad/iPod. It has features useful to any serious musician, but has some specifics that make it especially appealing to drummers:

- improve your inner clock with the ability to add bars of silence to the click
- play any polyrhythmic combination of rates 1-32
- play cycles of rates
- build a "rhythmic scale" over any click rate
- play common stickings at any rate, over any rate (eg. paradiddles at a quintuplet rate over a click in 7)
- accent notes and note groupings (eg. play as paradiddles and accent every 3rd note)
- timing accurate to 44.1kHz
- tap tempo input
- high quality sounds tailored to the iPhone/iPod
- supports iOS v4.3 and above

How you combine these components is up to you -- the possibilities are almost endless.

See demo videos and get all the details at polynome.net, by Liking us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter @PolyNomeApp, and I'll be sure to keep Drummerworld in the loop, too.

Stay tuned!

This sounds really cool actually! I have the program metronomics on my iPad I sucked it up and purchased it. It's a good deal considering it has all the features Of a boss metronome and some additional things too, but is only 1 dollar instead of 100 dollars. I hope yours turns out well. I will check it out because I want a metronome with good sound sets.

I use "mobile metronome". It is not as feature-rich as the one described here, but its good when traveling.

Sounds good, I'm currently looking for a new one as the one I've had for ages isn't brilliant. One thing that really annoys me about it is the click sound, it's really harsh to the ears, and you can't change it. Will there be interchangeable click sounds on this app? By the way, the polyrhythm thing sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Me too. I've purchased the full version recently and it comes with vibration-click. Very useful

For the OP, consider an Android port, it has a huge market

We're definitely looking in to it and know there are a lot of you guys out there. This is a spare-time project, though, and since neither of us owns an Android device we'll need to see how the iOS version fares before we can decide if it's worth it to port.

Thanks for the interest!

You would probably do good on android, I have an android phone (htc evo) and an iPad. For my iPad there are 4 or 5 really really good full featured metronomes out on the app store for at most 99 cents and 2 are free. They have full metronomic sequencers, pollyrhthm capabilities ect.

On my android phone there is not one with these features that works. I use mobile metronome version 1.2.4 and it's really just an average metronome with alot of advertisements right by the stop start button....evil joke that gets the better of me when I accidentally press the ad.

We're live! Get PolyNome on the App Store right here.

For a limited time only, it's available at $0.99 / 69p.. Check it out and let us know what you think!

If you enjoy PolyNome, we'd be grateful for a review on the store -- we want to get this on the radar of as many drummers as possible.

Looking forward to hearing your impressions.

Well I did buy the app, but then remembered why I stopped buying apps... because I have a first gen iPod Touch that can't update to even iOS 4, so I can't actually use the app. Silly me. Hopefully I'll be getting an iPhone soon though, and then I will let you know what I think of the app! You win this time Apple...

I checked it out and the sticking feature really sets this apart, I want it but I'm not willing to pay for the iPhone only version because I hate pixelated apps on my iPad. Will there be a universal version soon?

If so, I'll surely grab it on my iPad!

PolyNome has only been out for a few hours, but we're already getting some great initial positive feedback. Thanks to everyone who went out and purchased it!

Joe went ahead and made a couple of great instructional videos. Here's an in-depth feature covering all of PolyNome's features:

Here's an example of how you might apply PolyNome to learning a particular piece or passage:

Definitely looking in to it for v1.1.

Not sure if it makes a difference, but there isn't really much graphical content in the app -- it's mostly text based plus a small visualization widget -- so the scale up isn't as gross as it would be for, say, a game.

But I hear you, and we're on it. Thanks for the interest.

Can't change sounds ,the sounds revert to the originals after I change them and save them.

P.S. using Reaper and programmed a click in there instead.

Sorry anxiety here but I can't get it to function properly.

For you android users like myself, you guys should try Metronome Beats Pro. You can have ANY subdivision; from 1 to 16 beats per bar, and 1 to 16 clicks per beat. Has tap tempo, you can save settings, and best of all it has a tempo trainer...you set it to automatically increase and/or decrease speed every set number of bars AND can tell it to mute bars. Also has a timer to stop the click after a certain amount of time OR bars.

FWIW I'm not at all affiliated with the developer...I've just found it to be an invaluable practice tool.

Is it not available for android devices?? Apple phones suck IMO when it comes to most things as compared to android phones. Either way it would be wonderful it was available for both systems i would definitely give it a try if so!

P.S. i also use Mobile Metronome currently, and it does seem pretty average. Once this polynome app gets on android i will give it a try, but in the meanwhile does anyone have any recommendations for something better than Mobile metronome that is on android?

Polynome ios only. Until they have enough capital to do android version. I use it alot and like that you can add different phrases within a measure. For example, if you are struggling with table of time, put it all in or just the part your having problems with and play to it. If you have a groove, put it in and play to it, etc.

Would be interested in how Metronome Beats Pro handles different phrasing within a measure,

Also has 2 metronomes, for poly rhythmic playing.

Others good ones I use is:
ProMetronome - time signatures, accents, subdivisions, tap, polyrythm, etc.

Metronomerous - this has a great feature to ramp up/down the tempo within a given tempo range. Take your range and divide it up however you want to it to ramp. Also has many subdivisions.

hope this helps...

I just bought PolyNome. Like most inherently superior people, I have an iPhone, so I'm looking forward to using this app!

Ah, I kid ... Use whatever works for you. For me, it's Apple.

Anyway ... I'll try it out and let you know what I think! Glad to support someone who's doing this kind of thing, at least.

While I agree with you in general, when it comes to audio path and latency Android has always been behind iOS. Only with the latest (Nougat) OS and the VR-ready HW the gap is finally closed.

So there's a reason a lot of music apps are iOS only - it takes a lot of work to make great, low latency, audio on Android.
