I first heard him with the Bill Evans Trio - wonderfully smooth. He will be missed.

This is a beautiful honor to him. Made my night. I had to say a few prayers for him. Thanks.

Crikey, which thread do we choose?

This one?

Or RIP Paul Motian (1931-2011)

Or this one Jazz drummer and composer Paul Motian dies

I know little of his playing but Todd (I think) made a thread a while ago pointing to an article on his blog based on an interview with him:

http://www.chuckbraman.com/Writing/W...g/Motian1.html

Definitely a character. My fave quote from him was:
I'm not thinking about backbeat, rock, or whatever. I'm thinking music. There's a specific tempo that's stated in the very beginning, and that's already there. I don't have to force it on to everybody else and myself included. I don't have to enforce it. It's happening already. I don't have to do [expletive]. I could have just stayed there and not played a [expletive] note.

Definitely a character. I have a couple stories about him. That's him in my avatar.
