Default What do you think of my Mapex Kit?

Hey guys,

I'm 17 years old and i live in New Zealand, I've been collecting this drum kit for about 3 years and its my pride and joy. I just wanted to show it to you guys and get some feedback on things i should do/add to it and also some tips and criticism wouldn't go under-looked.

Here are the specs,

The kit is a Mapex Pro M series.
It was a six piece maple kit;
20''x22'' Bass
8''x10'' Tom
10''x10'' Tom
12''x12'' Tom
14''x14'' Floor Tom (mounted)
14''x5.5'' Snare

Iv added on,
A 20''x22'' Stagg Bass
A 16''x16'' Stagg Floor Tom
A 12''x13'' Stagg Tom
A 14''x5.5'' Steel Stagg Snare

Cymbals are;

15" Zildjian Dark Custom Crash
14" Zildian ZBT Hi-Hats (X2)
12" Orion Effects Splash w/ 4.5" Bell
14" Zildjian China-Crash w/ 12" Mini China w/ 4" Bell
18" Zildjian Vintage Crash
20" Zildjian ZBT Ride
16" Zildjian ZBT Rock Crash
18" Sabian B8 Pro Chinese

Percussion;

x1 Tambourine
6" Cowbell
8" Cowbell
4" Mounted Bells (on X Hi Hits)

Pedals;

Maxtone Double Pedal
Gibraltar Double Pedal (far right red bass drum)
Mapex Single Pedal (beneath Floor Tom)

Heads are assorted between Aquarian Classics and the Mapex/Remo Stock heads
Bass drum has a Remo Powerstroke 2 Head

Well that's about it. Leave your criticism and any questions you have, feel free to give me tips and show your kits too. Cheers

Nice drums. Different setup. Not a big fan of mixing finishes. To each his own I guess. Enjoy them.

How many arms and legs do you have??? Are you paid in your country by how many drums and cymbals you bring?? Theres no way you could utilize all of those components and theres no music that warrents them either. But if you like them thats all that counts. Interesting drum stool.

I like the Kits. I don't really care for them mixed together.
I would just play the green kit and use the red kit as a second kit.
There is probably no need for you to lug all of those drums around.
Keep the side snare if you want.
I would find a used matching Mapex floor tom and bass drum if I was going to expand the Mapex kit.

Oh, and I would remove the tape from the heads.
There is no need to apply tape to heads.
If it is a muffled sound that you desire there are many ways to get it without
taping the heads.

Because the far right bass drum is tuned ALOT lower than the main one and i use the left pedal on the double kick to reach it =)

My main genre of playing is metal-extreme metal. I also play alot of Dream Theatre and Tool stuff. Im not trying to be Terry Bozzio (to me that WAY over the top), i just wana have as many different sounds as i can so i can create weird and wacky peices. Cheers =)

I like your kit... very interesting and creative.

What type of rythm or patterns do you do with the pedal on the floor tom?

I don't like the rubber tapes on your heads though...

when i use that pedal il play dominantly with my left boot on bass and i put my right heel over the pedal under the floor tom. I was just messing around one day and found that it makes a cool latin sorta bass/crack sound. Very experimental haha, iv used it at a pub gig i did and i had people peering over at me to see what the hell was making that sound haha

You should buy this. It's birch, but would be cool to have two kits in the same finish to mix up:

17 years young! I wish I had a kit like yours when I was 17! Led Zeppelin still was producing albums then and Rush had just released 2112 when I was your age. Keep drumming!

I love how this thread became a conversation haha.

Anyway.

Great kit dude, I saw it in the Mapex thread and did wonder about the workability, but it's one of those Frankensteins that I would be rather happy playing on :P

Fine Mapex kit to my eyes (I'm no drum expert though), looks great fun to play. Seems a bit too large to be really practical, but why not having all that stuff just in case. I was right in my guess that the owner is doing something in the Portnoy vein.

I love Mike's drumming. Him and George Kollias are the main influences on this set up.

Just curious, everyone is saying that my set-up is very awkward and different, but to me its the most comfortable i can have it. I am 6ft 3" and everything is within a very comfortable reach.

Can i just get some specific things that you guys think looks wrong or awkward, just so i can look into moving/tilting something etc, to see if it will be more comfortable for me to play.

Cheers guys.

Basically the only this that would bother me would be the cymbal arrangement on the right side. I wouldn't have a clear shot trying to get to a couple of them, but that's just me and the angles and perspectives of the photographs could have something to do with this illusion I'm seeing. If everything works well for you from your drumming position, don't pay attention to others trying to re-organise your drums. Just play away and enjoy yourself. You'll readjust if you feel the need.

Dennis

You need to change your heads from those dented things and check out some tuning videos and get rid of the tape.

I would really like Doc Dirt to put up a video of himself playing, he sounds like he has been playing as long as the hills are old, and has a strong opinion about pretty well everything. If he has the chops to back it up, I concede and will crawl back to my corner.

Nice kit. If it works for you - that's all that matters. Remember that alot of people asked Louie Bellson what he was doing when he introduced an additional bass drum, and look what happened with that ;)

You do your thing - if others have a problem with it, that's not your problem.
