If you like the sound of big snare drums and can get one cheap, it's a nice drum to have in the arsenal. However, the finish leaves a lot to be desired and the lugs, whether you like them or not, actually led to a number of complaints to Pearl that people would inadvertently hurt themselves....

Seriously this is one of my favorite snare drums. I've taken it on tour because I love how it sounds and how cheesy it looks. I swapped the top hoop for a die-cast and crank it with 42 strand wires. Lots of body from the 8" depth and killer projection. Records great, cuts live what more could you want. I think it was a steal new at 300. If you can get a used one in the 200's do it. Mines held up great for years. here is a pic, I only use about 1/3 of a moonjel now since I have the die-cast up top.

I think for $167, it would definitely be a good acquisition... certainly worth more than that IMO

They're tube lugs with spikes. Although you'd have to be pretty stupid to smash your hand into the side of a lug when playing IMO. There not sharp anyway there very rounded. I have some spikey ego lugs that could cut you but this wouldn't.

The one with the dragons is the newer "DDrum" Vinnie sig. model (not Pearl) and the pointed lugs screw out if you dont like them..I would be all over one for under 170. I have owned a few DDrum snares (bamboo with wood hoops, carmen appice brass monster) and the one negative about them is no bearing edges on any Ddrum snare I have ever seen (including the VP dragon.
