Default My DW Collectors Properly Presented

Decided it was time to put my DW Collectors kit (born on 10/12/2002) where it belongs - in the living room.

The dog and I like where the drums are now, but it may not last very long. Yeah, you got it - my wife's out of town.

Nice photos. Now quick get them back where they belong before the Mrs. comes home.

I'm thinking of leaving them and using the, "But, honey, they're art" con. It worked with the Laguna Pueblo ceremonial drum and the 40 year old conga you can see on the right.

If that doesn't work, I'll tell her how great it was to have band practice at our place instead of shlepping my gigging kit - a Sonor Tiger kit - to the guitarist's house and how our living room had these perfect acoustics for the band and...and....

I don't have a prayer, do I?

Wife's back.

She walked into the house, glanced over at the drums, then looked around the rest of the room.

"This'll never work," she said.

"But the drums are beautiful," I said.

"I'm talking about those two chairs at the coffee table. They're old and faded and need to be recovered. You don't have a problem with that, do you, sweetie?"

"Huh? Oh, no. No problem at all," I said.

In other words, this is going to cost me some money, but so far so good.

Closeups, huh? That can be arranged. Here we go:

The sizes are DW's usual: 22", 10", 12", 14". Color is candy apple red lacquer. It's deep and thick like good auto lacquer, not showing the grain. Some people don't like that. I do because it always reminds me of an old Corvette I used to lust after back in the day.

The snare is a 5.5 x 14 Ludwig Phosphor Bronze I bought new earlier this year. The cymbals are vintage Avedis Zildjian 22" and 19" rides and 14" hats that I've had since the late '50s/early '60s, a 16" Sabian AAX crash that I got in the early '90s as a gift for subbing on a tour, and a later '90s 18" Zildjian crash I bought on eBay. The rides and hats have a shimmering sound you just can't find anymore. (Although I think Paiste Giant Beats come damn close.)

Actually, I shouldn't call the vintage Zildjians rides. They were just sold as "cymbals" then.

Bass pedal is Yamaha. The hi-hat stand is a sturdy, wonderful Gibraltar I bought in the mid '90s and can't find a reason to replace. Got it at a music store on Ventura Bl. in Studio City/Sherman Oaks, CA. When I walked in and asked what it cost, the salesman wouldn't answer. Just said, "Make me an offer." I offered to leave, and then he spoke up so we could negotiate a real deal.

Hipshot's 1st rule of showbiz negotiation: Always make the other guy go first.
