Default Heads for Gretsch Catalina Maple 7pc toms

I need new heads on my toms which is a Gretsch Catalina Maple. Does anyone who owns this kit have any suggestions?

I've been very happy with Emperor batters over Ambassador resos (except for the 10" which has an Ambassadors both sides). I also run PS3's for batter and reso on the kick.

Just normal emperors? lots of people say that the coated emperors or the Smooth White Emperors sound best. DId you get your kit from Greenbrier?

On this kit I'm using coated Emps and Ambs at the moment, but I've used clears on other kits before as well.

No, I bought mine second hand off a mate who bought it and then got himself into financial difficulty and couldn't keep it......although it was pretty much "as new" due to him not having it all that long.

Funny, the Cat maples are what lead me to this forum. I'd not heard of them and wanted to check them out before I said yes. Great little kit for the money. Enjoy it!

yes, its a great kit and great value. Just doesn't sound that great with the stock heads.(Gretsch by Evans. similar to 1-ply coated G1's)

I am using coated Evans G2 heads for the toms and the Gretsch by Evans heads as resonant.

Trying to find a resonant head to match the batter side still.

I have a Catalina Maple 16 inch floor tom with the rest of my Renown set and I am using Evan G1 clear resos and now I am usinf Evans EC2 SST batter heads and the drums sound great. Tuned high or low they sing.

I have coated emps over ambs and the drums sound great- floor toms are unbelievable. I tried a few head combos to find one I like on all the drums since the 10" is so small and the 16" so big.

Emad on the bass drum and stock reso with 4' hole off center on kick but it lacks the punch I want. Stock BD batter had a pretty nice sound (clear with dampening ring built in) actually and low low low.

Anyone have different advice for getting more punch out of the BD? (old thread so I am asking a new question- still related tho)
