A few questions and comments.

Who is managing this project of sending Leo some drum stuff.

Should we reach out to Modern Drummer for a donation or to publish an article about Leo? I think the fact that he has made is own hardware is amazing and more people should hear about it.

Once somebody figures out how we are going to do this, can a blanket PM or email sent to all those on this thread?

How do Cuban-Americans in Miami send mail and packages to loved ones in Cuba?

Also, the idea of sending. something declared as medicine is not something I personally want to do.

Matt

Hi leo!

My name is Audun and I'd love to help you to get your hands on some better gear. I see that some of the americans on the forum it can be a bit tricky to send things to Cuba. But I live in Norway and I don't think Fidel got any problems with us. But I will send you some sticks and some heads and stuff. I have a Old Pearl crash/ride if you are interested.

Ps. what sticks do you prefer?

Best regards from Audun =)

EDIT : I like the dude who posted before me's idea to contact a magazine to write about this awsome guy! =D

I think I'm going to email modern drummer today about this....It's people like Leo who keep the true spirit of drumming alive. If anyone deserves such a donation, it is him. I'll let you all know what I find out.

Hello Suzanne,

First of all I just wanted to tell you what a great mag. you guys have put together over the years. I've learned mroe from your articles than I ever could have imagined.

I did want to draw your attention to an issue I think you all would be interested. I'm a member of the drummer world forums, and there's a guy from Cuba who is in dire need of equipment. He can't buy any drug equipment there, not even sticks or heads. He has build his own double bass pedal and has had to repair broken heads because the only way to get equipment in Cuba is on the black market. Here's a link to the forum where this is all happening. If nothing else, maybe a small post to your readers about how lucky we all are to have our pearl forums and Tama rockstars when people in other countries can't get their hands on ANY equipment. Here's the link.

http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/s...ead.php?t=8061

Thank you for your time and congrats again on a great magazine.

Matt
That's what I sent to modern drummer...i'll let you know when I get a reply from them.

You have a terrible spelling mistake. "Drug" equipment.

Well, just read through 95% of the posts on this thread..

Remarkable! It's unlikely that i speak for myself here, but i can't be the only one that's taken one of their kits for granted?

I, like everyone else, thinks Leo's effort is amazing. Truely. Didn't realise how difficult it really is to get hold of such, what i would call the simpler things, such as drumsticks!

Unfortunately according to two couriers, postage from the UK to Cuba will not be possible. However, i would be more than happy to donate a sum of money through paypal if the 'hardware hamper' is still going ahead? Still no word from MD?

Anyway, hope this thread continues. Really very interesting!

Laul.

Unfortunately,to try to ship anything to Cuba is the result of: A.The U.S. Embargo against the Castro Regime (which will probably end with Castro's death,) and: B. the Castro Regime's own embargos against incoming products from the rest of the world. While it is tempting to solely blame the U.S.A. for this state of affairs, you will note that people from Mexico,Canada and Europe have had their own troubles trying to hurdle the Great Socialist Divide long enough to simply supply our Cuban brother with the drum supplies he so richly deserves. I have a family friend who has visited Cuba in the past,(she hath her own ways of working around idiotic things like embargos,) and when she returns to the U.S. from her teaching assignment in Japan I shall lobby her to return to Cuba on Leo's behalf. Until then,I see no other way around this shifting wall that we have seemed to create for ourselves. P.S.,I doubt whether MD would have any better luck at this than the members of this board but anything is worth a try if it acchieves results...

we should definitly get MD involved, i don't have any money or anything to send but its a great idea, modern drummer could help and it could be possible to get more people involved. and how could he make a double bass pedal, i looked at how theyre put together and id like to know how well it works, like is it smooth, fast etc. thats pretty cool that he could make his own. also, has anyone thought of messaging Bernhard?

this thread is like a year old. But yeah i hope $hit gets better for people in cuba now that castro has stepped down. It's ridiculous really that in the UK everyone hates the government and the police and says "oh yeah i think communisim would be a good idea" but when you see countries like this it really does make you think that even though labour are a pretty shite political party, we still have it way better over here. If i ever visit cuba and you still want a new double pedal, i'll give you my DW5000.

Hey everyone. Did we ever hear anymore from Leo? I'm curious about how he's doing and if we can in fact do anything to help him out. For those who aren't familiar, read the thread from the brginning.

Count me in on the help thing too. I have good contacts in Mexico and central America through powerful business friends. They may be able to offer logistical help. Apart from that I'm happy to donate / coordinate or do whatever. I'm a tenacious individual who's travelled to most parts of the world and transgressed the rules in every continent so get me involved if something is moving on this. I've only just picked up this thread. Can anyone offer an update? Leo, you still out there??

Hey Leo,

Great to hear you're out there and things are happening for you. I'm not surprised. I've just listened to your stuff and your drumming is AMAZING!!! I'm not a metal fan although I play rock stuff, but your playing is amongst the very best I've ever heard. That kit of yours is doing you proud. I'm not sure how you get such a great sound from it, but whatever you're doing, it works! I think you could pass on some of your tuning skills to others on this site. Your kick & tom work is just inspiring. Metal drumming is usually missing the kind of feel you have. Your stuff is the most impressive music post I've heard this year, especially considering the challenges you face. I'm super impressed and humbled by your efforts.

The only tiny observation on the recordings is the cymbal sound. Your existing cymbals aren't showing your superb work to best effect. How is the importation situation now in Cuba? Can you accept shipments from the UK for example, or Mexico? Please let us know, as I'm sure the fine guys on this forum have a bit of spare stuff we may be able to get to you as long as that's legal in Cuba.

Anyhow, keep on playing my friend. You inspire far more than you think!

Nice move GD!

Hey bro im very grateful for your words , in fact we made that recording last year , i have to study and workout a lot , for 5 month everyday , i have to play the songs with no mistakes using metronome , was a kind of hard to me because i never had played before with a clik , we made the recording in Havana city , all of us saves money to afford the recording of the drumset , its not the same drumset that you saw in my pics , it was a pearl but i dont know the series , i recorded with sabian cymbals , they rent me all of this.We recorded the drum in multitrack soft , then use a midi sound replacer and that is why you hear the drums sound real good. All this process took really a long time , because the guitars , bass and voclas were recorded using a pc in my guitar player home. The situation here its the same ,not too much changes,i dont really update with the importation to cuba.Of course that i can accept shipements but i think that the shipment will cost more than the gear itself , so it will be to easy, i was thinking about it and i think that the best way is to send stuff with tourist that came to Cuba .I live in holguin city , in the north there is a lot of beach and we have a lot of tourist from canada , uk and other countries. Its a honor to me to hear your words, it proves that my effort was not in vane.Thank you very much.

The sound you achieved is very close to a professional studio. I'm amazed you managed to do this with the drums in a loft and the rest in your guitar player's home. Big respect.

Leo,

I read this with interest for the first time yesterday when it was put back to the top. Unfortunately it seems that efforts to help you have all hit a brick wall. I just listened to your playing though and your playing is fantastic! If you ever get off the Island I think you're going to join a long line of well known Cuban drummers. Much respect here for your patience, attitude and tolerance to a very difficult situation.

Since it seems no magazine was willing to highlight your trials and tribulations I hope now that they can hear your playing that changes. The story and your innovation is nothing short of amazing.

Congratulations again and best of luck to you.

Well, I almost forgot about this thread!

As to the shipping problem. I'm fairly certain that you can ship gear from Canada to Cuba. And it just so happens that I reside in Canada.

I've got some gear kicking around that I could probably send to this guy.

So... I dunno how this is gonna work though. I'll try and hit up the post office tomorrow and see how shipping to Cuba works, and if it's even possible.

I'll get back to all of you as soon as I find out the deal about the shipping process, then post a message to see what we can do about this.

This is going to be a very expensive endeavor, I can tell already...

ALSO! I feel as though we should compile a list of what we're sending, just so he doesn't end up getting like, 20 double bass pedals, and no stands. Know what I'm saying?

Love always, drum brothers (and sisters!)
Thomas

Thomas
Agreed. Consolidation is the way to go. We need someone to act as a collection point and coordinate accordingly. I have very good friends who own a major manufacturing group headquartered in Toronto. They ship tons of stuff via carriers daily and have big contracts with the international shipping guys. I'm a consultant for their group & a family friend. I'll message them and see if we can pull some strings. I know it's thanksgiving weekend so I probably won't get a reply until Tuesday. I'll keep in touch, Kis.

Update: I've messaged my Canadian partners and asked them to look into this fully. I've also asked them if they would be prepared to act as a consolidation facility & arrange export packaging, paperwork, local tax formalities, etc. They'll check into this through their shipping partners to ensure it's all possible with no fees payable locally. I'd be very surprised if they don't offer to act as consolidator. Assuming it's all possible, they'll come back with an all inclusive shipping cost. I've asked them to consider a box 3' x 3' x 3' weighing approx 70lbs as a bass line. I'll update everyone as soon as I get a reply. Might take a few days. These guys are 110% trustworthy. KIS.

It was said awhile back in the thread that the stuff has to go to the embassy in Ottawa for approval before it can be sent. The paperwork needed costs $100.

Thanks Donv, so that becomes part of the cost. Let's see what the total exercise will come out at and we'll work out if it's doable. My gut feeling is that the preparation stuff will be the least of the challenges. I expected release documentation to be part of the deal as almost all nations need to check for conformity under restricted goods legislation.

Well if the DW community can make it a reality, count me in. KIS, can you be the coordinator since you have the shipping contact? If it's an international shipper, they most likely just fill a whole cargo container at a time, so it's probably easiest just to crate all the kit contributions in a box and give it to your shipping friend (along with some money to cover the shipping). Then Leo would just have to find a way to pick up the stuff at the port.

Anyway, let's start a list a list of contributions, just cut paste it to a new thread and add to it:

1) Pearl rhythm traveller 14x4 black snare drum -diosdude
2) ddrum agenda double braced hi hat stand -diosdude
3) peace? boom cymbal stand -diosdude
4) 2 gibraltar? universal multi clamps -diosdude
5) Misc drum heads -diosdude
6) $20 cash USD -diosdude

Super of you my friend. Let's see what comes back on the logistics. My Canadian friends aren't shippers themselves, they're manufacturers but they ship stuff all over, every day and have significant contracts with shippers (the usual, UPS, DHL + specialist carriers). Clearances will be the big challenge. We'll most likely be best advised to engage a Cuban agent. Everything will need to be 100%, right down to the finest detail. Goods of commercial value for permanent export attract attention as it's often seen as a way around importation duties. As soon as I know what's possible, I'll post straight away.

Generous offer my friend, very generous.
