hello very nice your answer sorry for my english,i have paste a mat becouse my bass drum head is broken but with innovation i cant get the sound that i like besides the tension of the head is very loose so i can get a focused and a crisp sound ,,i say that if i always play in this drum and in the double pedals ,what would happen if someday i play with a good pedals or a good drums..thanks again,

Cool kit, your very inovative. Is the wire connected to your bass drum pedal to keep it from moving? You set the chair leg in the loop right? I love it this is good stuff !!

Hey Leo, cool kit man. And nice work on the pedal.

Don't your drums and stands slide around on that floor?

You got any recording of your Cuban metal band that we can hear?

In many ways that is one of the coolest kits around, looks like you enjoy playing it which is the main thing.

More power to ya.

I like this finish, don`t think that it is too important what you have, just think you wouldn`t have any drums! What is the spec of your sticks? the little tom head looks lika bomb field...many little holes...your set looks good and unique. ;)

Man great kit! This made me register here to post! This is what the roots of music are about, for me at least. Necessity is the mother of invention. You have a great attitude! Best of luck to you and your band.'

I agree. Your love of music and drums shows the length you are willing to go through. Great job on the pedal and the bass drum fix. I would love to hear your band as well. I play in a metal band too. It's inspiring to see how dedicated that you are, no lie.

My comments -

1) Many of us need to stop and think how well we have it.

2) He MADE the double pedal. That works on so many levels.

The most important thing is you have a kit to play on!

I store my kit at the studio so I only get to play it at weekends.

Keep on Drummin'!

Oh...and I played with Samba band in Cuba about 4 years ago...I was on holiday and managed to get a 10 minute sit in!!

I totally agree, I mean....the double pedal...he MADE it!! To me this expresses so much. It is one thing to have a kit and want a double pedal....work, save and then go buy one. It's totally another to want a piece of equipment and then MAKE it. Right on leo!!

it's very inspirational to see someone as dedicated as you. I think that younger drummers especially (myself included) take what we have for granted. The fact that you made do with what you had, took pride in it, and built what you couldnt buy has really made a statement. I think we are all proud that you posted here...way to humble us (well..i cant speak for everyone, but me at least)

Leo, I'm sure all of us here are impressed and inspired by your obvious love for drumming. With such dedication and ingenuity, I believe you will certainly have that dream kit someday. Just keep at it! If music lives richly in the heart and mind, the instrument will find you. Great job on that pedal and I like the snare stand as well. In my experience, something you actually make yourself can have so much more personal meaning. I like the kit's color also - I've been thinking of building a custom kit in a similar shade. You have every reason to be proud - you sure have my respect. Reading your posts has truly made my day better!

I absolutely LOVE the music of Cuba and have been listening to and studying it for many years. I'm an avid conga player and just yesterday learned a new (for me) Cuban pattern I'm now practicing. It saddens and surprises me that gear - things as simple as drum heads - are so hard to come by in a country that has given the world such a rich and enduring musical legacy.

Anyway, thanks for the pics and posts, Leo. Let's hear some more from you!

I hear it's hard to get a lot of stuff in Cuba and you're resourceful to basically make your own kit out of spare parts. I make a lot of my own hardware and I respect people who do their own thing.

It's pretty remarkable for someone to make their own double bass pedal. You've done an amazing job with your kit! I'd like to hear some of it.

The original post should be reprinted in Modern Drummer. Makes me realize how spoiled we are here in the US.

The sheer amount of talent the world has gotten from Cuba is amazing. We have a lot of jazz, fusion and of course Latin giants that have been sharing thier gifts with the world. Usually, that means a choice between home, and escape. I'll stop there because it will just anger me that Cuban musicians face so many barriers.

It is shameful that dedicated musicians like this go begging for cymbal wingnuts, even a drum carpet. I feel like setting up a collection for this dude, asking everyone to donate their unusued gear to him. I toss stuff out that this guy would be overjoyed to have.

Thats a good idea, I've got a load of cymbal stands, old cymbals ( soon ), and an old double pedal ( soon ), thats probably never gonna be used again!!

Damnn, and I thought I had it hard in Eastern Europe...haha...no way.
You're totally awesome man.
I saw this russian guy play on some random 15yr old drumkit the other day, the kind of mass product that was produced around here while the Soviet Union was still king and he had the nicest double stroke I'd seen in a while. He seemed like a really great guy too, tried to talk in estonian as much as he could, I really felt bad that he has so limited possibilities.
But your kit is actually way better than his, haha, and you have a double pedal!
And imagine if you ever get to play on a decent kit, haha, it'll feel like heaven,
your a beast man, keep it up.

this is amazing, makes me feel guilty, not that i have the money to purchase drum stuff, but that i have the availability of a huge amount of it and take it for granted, as with other things. Thanks for the great post.

i agree -- this is totally inspirational. I was just reading an interview on Modern Drummer and it was discussed just how bad the musical equipment is in cuba -- lots of broken instruments, etc. I would certainly donate as well...

good for you, my man. Be proud of that kit. Let us know hot to send you stuff -- i will go down to San Ash and buy you a bundle of sticks -- dont be surprised if an almost new set of Paiste PST 5's finds it way over to you as well.

Cuba has a rich musical heritage. It's odd its musicians must scrounge for instruments and parts.
