I just picked up a practice set of cymbals to use on my set, after cracking an A Custom 20" Crash (OUCH!). I replace the practice ones when I record or gig. On that same note, I was thinking of picking up a spare hoop to replace the original hoop for my BD. It's an 18 x22" DW Collectors Maple. Question: Do you think it will change the tone from the original hoop? Since I'm getting it used, I may not know if it is maple, birch or another wood. I'll be switching over to the AQ SK2 and keep the stock DW Reso. I'd just be doing this to keep the pedal rash off the original hoop. Never know, I may end up selling the kit for an exotic finish? Thanks! |

Get yourself a hoop protector and call it a day. Or you can do what I do and don't tighten the clamp on the pedal to the kick. I find this also helps with sustain on my smaller kicks- 20 and under.

There won't be much difference between wood hoops of the same width, but you'd definitely notice more attack with a metal hoop, usually regarded as a budget item included on cheap kits.

True. I've got a hoop protector, so just looking for another alternative since I'm changing the batter anyways. I'm needing to keep my clamp tight and secure. Thanks though
