Default Realizing that its in the BLOOD!

Hey guys and gals! Haven't been around for awhile. Stepped away from the kit, sold all my gear and put down the sticks. Apartment life makes it tough to practice when I want and need to. I made the decision to put it all away-pack it in-throw in the towel. Give it up. Finding a band to play for seemed near impossible and I got into a rut in my playing. I was discouraged and lacked the passion to play that I mostly retained from my more youthful day. Now at closing in on 52 years old, I feel a flicker, a faint but ever present pilot light glowing. I thought I could completely extinguish my love of the instrument and just be the guy with memories of bygone days of blissful grooving and that would be that. Now I'm not so sure that that is my mind set. I still drum on everything. When I'm at a stoplight, its the steering wheel and dash (floor boards make a great kick sound) When at home its my lap or table of some sort. It drive the wife crazy. She asked me the other day when I was going to stop kidding myself and start playing again. That got me thinking and starting to go revisit forums and really examine my life with and without drums.
Sorry that this post went a little long. This is the first time in a while I have posted anything on a drummer forum.. It feels almost natural to be here. I realize that it feels in natural to not be playing. -James

Real name? Bob Davis

Age? 41

How long have you been playing? 27 years

Origin of user name? I'm Bob. STX is the airport code for where I live - St Croix, in the US Virgin Islands

Your top 5 drummers? In no particular order: Neil Peart, Steve Smith, Manu Katche, Carter Beauford, Joe Morello

Make of drumkit? Working on building my own. In the meantime, I'm playing a borrowed kit.

Make of cymbal? Any drummer not getting paid to endorse a make who insists on one make is foolishly restricting his potential voices. In the past, before I matured into someone who realizes that "Ford vs. Chevy" arguments are puerile, I was pretty loyal to Paiste. But then I wised up. I'll play what sounds best, and I couldn't care less who made it.

Where do you practice? Spare bedroom, to my wife's dismay.

Are you in a band? Yes. Kind of. ;)

Do you play covers or originals? Mix.

What style of music? You could call it "roots rock".

Favourite take out food? Indian.

What country do you live in? US Virgin Islands.

One really odd fact about yourself? I've had seven careers, if you count music, in my short life. From soldiering to brewing craft beer to running my own business.

How did you start drumming? Clarinet is infinitely less cool than drums. Krupa > Goodman! :D

Hey guys. As you can tell, I joined this forum back in summer of 2005, I only made a couple of posts and haven't come back since. I was 18 and just graduated from high school. I have been a prolific member at musician's forums (what was MXtabs and is now Sputnik Music) since 2004 although the forums have been gutted and there's no drum community anymore.

I've been playing constantly, but there was a 2-3 year period just recently where I stopped advancing and even started decreasing in skill, as the bands I was playing in weren't engaging me. I don't even live with my drumset but I've been woodshedding the past couple of months on a drumpad and have already seen vast improvements.

Real name? Justin Radford
Age? 27
How long have you been playing? 15 years this summer
Origin of user name? Long story, but its been my online alias since 1999.
Your top 5 drummers? Ian Paice, Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell, Ringo Starr, Gene Krupa
Make of drumkit? Sonor, Pearl, and Rhythm Traders
Make of cymbal? Zildjian, Sabian, Amedia, Wuhan, Paiste
Where do you practice? Pad at my apartment, set at parents' house and at rehearsal studios
Are you in a band? Two permanently, although I am temporarily filling in for a third at this time while they find a permanent drummer
Do you play covers or originals? Mostly originals but I am a fan of covers
What style of music? One is proto-metal (think Deep Purple/Uriah Heep), the other is campy indie pop
Favourite take out food? Thai
What country do you live in? United States
One really odd fact about yourself? I have a larger head, and shorter limbs than the vast majority of people my height
How did you start drumming? Taking snare drum lessons

Hey everybody,

I've been posting some videos on the forum, but realized I haven't bothered to introduced myself, and noticed that forum seems to be a bit of an inside, tight group. A lot of great people and drummers that have gotten to know each-other over the years. I look forward to continuing to be a part of this great online community.

Real name?
My name is Campbell Youngblood-Petersen, and I've been living in New York City for about a year now.

Age?
How long have you been playing?
I'm 24, and started playing piano 15 years ago, solely because it was required for me to be a percussionist two years later in fifth grade band.

Origin of user name? My username is pretty obviously my initials.

Your top 5 drummers? In no particular order: Brian Blade, Eric Harland, Justin Brown, Stanton Moore, Adam Deitch

Make of drumkit? I have a Gretsch New Classic Bop Kit, Yamaha Tour Custom, and Yamaha Al Foster HipGig - the only kit with me in NYC :(

Make of cymbal? 20'' Bosphorus Master Series, 21'' Sabian AA Raw Ride, 22'' Bosphorus Antique Series, 14'' Bosphorus Jeff Hamilton Hi-Hats, full set of Sabian AAs

Where do you practice?
Surprisingly in my NYC apartment!

Are you in a band?
Do you play covers or originals?
What style of music?
Yes- currently I am playing with a group called h.y.p.e. that plays original r&b/soul/jazz/funk/fusion

Favorite take out food?
Can't argue with pizza

What country do you live in?
USA

One really odd fact about yourself? I have listened to so many interviews with great drummers, that I have developed a strange habit of often picturing myself answering some interview question related to some specific drumming pursuit when working on something.

How did you start drumming?
Pots and pans baby! My parents tell me a story of my unofficial baptism, since I wasn't exactly raised religious, where the legendary master drummer Babatunde Olatunji picked me up and threw me up in the air (and luckily caught me!), so I like to think that started everything off.

Hello! I'm Eugene and at the time I'm writing this I am 24 years of age. I started playing when I was 9 or 10 so about 14-15 years. My user name actually came from my original screen name for some gaming website. It was close to what was suggested; plus 7 is my favorite number.I don't really have a "top 5 drummers list" but I do enjoy Aaron Spears and Tony Royster Jr.
I just recently purchased a Mapex Meridian Maple drum kit and also received some Sabian AAX cymbals. If I practice, I'm usually in the basement. I don't play in a band per se, but I do play at church and with the Drexel University Gospel Choir. Many of the songs I play to are technically covers but there is usually a spin or twist that we put on the songs. The main style I play is Gospel (which incorporates a lot), but I'll play to anything.
Not sure what my favorite take out food is. Maybe chicken wings and pizza rolls from the Chinese food store. I live in America, Specifically right outside of Philadelphia, PA. One really odd fact about me is that really isn't odd is through the choir I have been able to play on both coasts (east and west) and in two different countries (America and Canada).

Hey kids,

I am Phil Schinbein, a drummer and drum smith (is that a real term?) from Reservoir, Victoria Australia. That's a suburb of Melbourne, Australia or "Melb'n, Straya" as it's pronounced round here. Digressions...

I grew up in Canada, studied jazz performance as a drum set major at Malaspina in Naniamo, BC though now it's called Vancouver Island University I believe.

After three years on cruiseships I moved to Oz to be with a loverly lady I met at sea.

I play my own snares, Sabian Cymbals, Mapex Saturn kits, Gibraltar hardware (except for my Jojo Mayer Pedal which is rad), Evans heads and Vater sticks.

Attached is a pic of my current touring rig with my band, The Bon Scotts. Notice the Stealth Rack. If you don't have one, get one. They are awesome.

Hey guys! I've been lurking for a while, picking up ideas from the technique part of the forum. Decided that it's time to register and start using the forum a bit!

My name is Įsi Žóršarson and I'm a 24 year old drummer. I've been playing drums for the past seven years but before that I was a classical guitarist and a clarinet player.

I play Gretsch drums, using a Afrigan Mahogany renown series kit

24x14
13x9
16x16

I use a bunch of different kinds of cymbals but currently really like Dark Matter series from Dream, the HHX series from Sabian and the K series from Zildjian.

I live in Iceland although for the summer I live in Berlin doing a festival tour with FM Belfast where I play a standing percussion set-up. I also play with MUCK which is a real thrashy noise punk band.

I do some session work from time to time as well.

Glad to be here! Here are some nice pictures of my current set-up for the summer and my drums.

Hi all!
My name's Dario and I'm 16. I started playing an instrument when I was only 8 or 9 in a small orchestra in my city but I played only percussion like tambourine, bongos...
Now I'm able to play the drum discreetly because since 2 years ago I've been having private lessons from a neighbour.
I live in a city near Genoa, in Italy and thats why my English isn't very good, I hope you're gonna be patient :)!
I usually play in my bedroom where there is my digital drum (XDrum dd 402). Unfortunately I live in a flat so I can't make a lot of noise...
When I play drum I always use my sd10 swinger sticks (Vic firth), the best ones I ever tried!
My favorite drummer is Chad Smith.
I play in a cover band with some friends and we are looking for a place, like a pub, where we could play together.
Buongiornio a tutti dall'Italia!

Hi all,

I'm ChrisB, 43 years old from Sweden.
Currently I play Tama drums, Zildjian A Custom and Sabian HHX cymbals.
I've been playing for 23 years now, late starter I guess.
Around 10 years ago I basically stopped playing, especially gigging. Was tired of bullshit and idiots. Started fiddling w electronic drums and recording, doing some crappy songs etc. Played now and then w friends until around 2011 when I started playing some more serious stuff again.
Now I mostly play modern jazz & fusion.

Hey DW! I am 32, from the Saint Louis area and been a drummer for 27 years. I have recently just got back into playing my kit after a long break. And good lord... the changes that have happened in the drummer's world. :) All of the new kits, cymbals, brands, etc... it was a bit overwhelming at first.

Hoping to make new friends here and learn a lot as well. :)

Welcome!

The important thing to know is that the act of drumming and what you do to make it happen, and what's expected of the drummer, etc.,....none of that has changed. It's amazing how the marketing of new drumming products makes us question how we do this drumming thing. The job has basically remained unchanged since before you were born ;)

So you've been playing since you were five, eh? Me too!

Yep, since I was 5. I don't remember what life was like before I began playing. :) I am a member of another chat board, but heard this one would maybe fit me a bit better. So, I'm glad to be here. :)

Plenty of really good people here, and just about no drama. And when drama develops we start making fun of it ;)

I like it here.
