The point is another drum to play and some like it on the left side rather than almost behind them on the right side.

Please don't comment if you're going to be rude about it. Obviously that's the point, I'd like to know how people apply it and what made them do that.

It was hardly rude. The point made abundantly clear was, that it comes down to preferance, like pretty much every facet of drumming.
Why do some guys play with hats in front of them, or to the right of them. Why do some guys play with two rides and no crashes? Why don't some guys use toms at all? It's purely down to preferance. As GD stated (very un-rudely, IMHO) many like to place a second floor tom on the left as it is easier to reach than having it pushed back and to the right as per a more traditional two floor tom set up.

Over 20 years ago ... an amazing jazz drummer cat that I knew suggested to me ... that I should place a drum left of my hi-hat ... so I did. And I've never stopped since ... although sometimes it's a single drum .... sometimes it's my SPD-S .... for quite a while it was 2 octobons and a 12 and 13 inch rack tom set ...

That's a very interesting set-up, unique. how long did it take to get used to it? Thanks, PFOG, no need to attack

Took really, no time at all ... and I can jump off this kit and on to a "traditional" set and not even think about it ... I've found that ... as with a lot of other things in life ... there is no problem until "my mind" creates one ....

I remember always seeing an instructional book by Gary Chester ("New Breed", 1986) in Modern Drummer as a kid that apparently influenced a lot of drummers, including the likes of Dave Weckl, to get into left side floor tom playing. I assume it's still a valuable resource since it's still being published.

Thanks. You all seem to assume I'm against left floor toms or I think they're dumb. Not at all. A friend of mine uses one and when I asked about it he said because other drummers he'd seen, but he doesn't use it himself. I just wanted to know what people use them for, not an attack on my post.

Why are you seeing every helpful response to this thread as an attack? I'm not trying to be a smart arse here mate, I'm genuinely perplexed as to why you've got your back up.
Imagine the responses you've recieved have been delivered with a wink and a smile, as opposed to us throwing bricks at you and I'm sure you'll come to a similar conclusion. A chip on your shoulder is your problem, not ours....please don't continue to make it so. Take the replies with the good grace with which they were offered up. There's no angst or antagonism, just guys trying to answer your question the best they know how. No need to keep spitting back at them.

If you can't come up with any idea for why someone might want to use one, despite the answers you've been given in good faith, then you're just as braindead as your weirdly defensive posts make you sound. Is that the attack you were looking for?

Anyway, i tried that setup for a while but i could never really make it work for me. One up, two down to my right is where i'm most comfortable. I am seeing more drummers with a tom to their left now a days. Maybe it works for some people, just not for me. lol

It could also be another way of getting that ride cymbal closer - by sticking the right rack tom way over to the left instead of just removing it. Okay it's not a floor tom, but who cares. It might make for some comfy triplets too (R,L,B, etc..) - that's what first comes to mind anyway.
I feel some experimenting coming on... |
