I have a set and it does well with a 4 piece rock band in a club setting. For that matter, it would work in just about any setting with the proper sound reinforcement. Be sure to mic every drum in loud situations and have someone who is experienced with sound reinforcement EQ and process them properly.
I think the bass drum gives a GREAT punch for it's size. |

Seems to me, you'd be better off shopping for a Gretsch Catalina Maple or Club Rock kit ... if you're playing rock, blues, and "some" jazz ...

PS- The Jazz kit was cheaper than the rest, that's why i was going to get it (tight budget)

I have the Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz drum set. I like the 18" bass drum because it does not seem to compete with the bass guitar as much for sonic space as a larger bass drum. I have only played mine in our practice room, but I did go to a show where the drummer played one. He told me that it is easy to mic and get a good sound over a PA.
I also have another set with a 22" bass drum because I want the bigger boom sometimes. Good luck.
