Default Plastic sounding head, any help?

I ordered an Aquarian Super Kick II for my batter head and an Aquarian Black Regulator w/ a 4 inch port hole. I went with these after reading nothing but positive reviews and liking the sound I heard on Youtube in a few videos. Well the heads finally arrived today, and I put them on and stuck a regular pillow inside. I used a beater from my pedal as a mallet to test it as I tuned. I got a sound out of it that I really liked, so I set the drum back up, hooked my pedal back to it, and...bam. Not the sound I just had. Rather than the nice thump I had with the mallet, its now a plastic sounding splat. I've been expirimenting with the pillow, the tuning, even trying out my old heads...nothing is working. I don't think the problem is the head. Its most likely me. What could I be doing wrong to get this sound?
