From G2 to EC2

Well, I'm lucky enough to live in a bungalow with a fairly reasonable gap between houses, and double glazing.

And

I'm sorry to say; that since swapping from G2 to Ec2, I've been banned from playing due to a dramatic noise level increase.

Hey dude.

I'm thinking of going for GC2's. What's the sound difference like? Any noticeable tone difference or just loudness compared to the EC2's?

Hard to believe Ec2's would be any louder than G2's since they are both the same heads using two 7mm layers and the only difference is that the EC2 has the overtone control ring, am I correct? Might be that you tuned them differently?

That is a very interesting story because when I went from G2's to EC2's, it seemed a little quieter to me. Maybe there is some other unknown factor. Good luck with that situation.

I'd say the factor is "coincidence". Neither head is any louder than the other. If anything, the EC2s can be perceived as quieter since they don't resonate as long.

This is exactly what I thought when I read this thread post.

If anything, the EC2's will come off as quieter.

Must be the tuning or something.

My first thought is (assuming your talking about toms) how can your bass and snare drum not be a problem.
Also I cant see any logic in the EC2's being louder.
My gues is maybe summer time is the problem.
I havent been able to play for a week now because of good weather and people sitting outside.

Nowadays, in our nieghborhood (SD - CA), more people are walking outside, doing yard work or in their yards.

Your nieghbors will be opening their windows for fresh air more this time of year...sigh...

Here's a thought: because the EC2's SEEM quieter (especially under earplugs or headphones), you end up hitting the toms harder to get the same tone out of them as you're used to from the G2s. But because your toms still project the same amount (they're the same toms, after all) what you get is an increase in volume but an apparent decrease in tone.

That's one way to explain it, anyway.

To me EC2's sound wetter (most likely the oil inside), and lower.

The G2's, the coated version, sound, to me, drier and plastikier, with more mid.

I agree they sound wetter, but theres no oil inside EC2's.

As far as I know, the Evans Hydrolics are the only heads with oil.

Good answers so far.

I've used both G2's and EC2's and I don't see how either head would be louder than the other.

The summertime theory along with tuning differences make the most sense to me.

One other tuning related issue is that if you feel freer to tune lower with EC2's, that might produce lower tones that are being carried with more presence. I echo the other poster who said the bass drum and snare drum should usually be the first issues. In my case it's the bass drum that is the guilty party if sound escapes more than usual.

I believe the depth is going through the walls easyier

It's not really liquid - although hopefully you're not on LSD. :).

As far as the 'rainbow' effect, I've heard some folks talk about Remo Pinstripes the same way. IIRC, it's something to do with the 2-ply aspect.

Evans Hydraulics are the only heads I know of with some kind of liquid in between the plies. They are also much more dampened than EC2's or Pinstripes.

Every 2ply has the rainbows just light reflecting between the 2 mylar ply's, clear Empores and G2's aswell.
