Wow! Incredibly convincing... I assume since the shells are so short and "resoless" they don't make as much of a ruccus as the average kit? My main concerns are sizes , which I feel are very suitable for my situation, and whether or not neighbors will hear it so much that it's a problem, which has occurred with my main kit a couple of times.

They can be loud. It all depends on how you play and if you use the mesh heads or not.
Here is the Rt being used for Jazz.

I think if I use brushes for when parents are home I'll be just fine. Thanks for your imput, and also for the sound clips! I feel hooked on these unless anyone else would like to speak up.

The DW practice kit is not a real drum kit. The Pearl RT is at least a workable kit in the right hands. You get what you pay for. I'll bet I could use that kit on a gig. How does DW's practice kit match up to that?

Don't get the DW practice pad kit if you have the choice. I had one and happily sold it. It's ok at best.
The major issue for me was the pads have a plastic backing which snapped. I used 5a sticks and never slammed it crazy hard. Once the plastic cracked (pretty quickly the two large diamter ones broke but the 2 smaller were fine) they became unplayable and would untighten and fall off. I replaced them with wood backed normal practice pads and it was cool, but I had 2 lying around, doing that outright would have been expensive. Also having tile in the room it was set up in was no good, I had to wedge it into a corner or against a wall and weight it down with a 10lb dumbell, I imagine with carpet that wouldn't be that huge of an issue. I never played a pearl RT but atleast it's a real kit i'd spend the extra and go for it. If space is a huge huge premium and you have some wood backed pads with the right thread size then maybe it's a decent investment. |

Another vote for the RT. You have an affordable, quiet practice kit with the mesh heads but a real (if quirky) kit if you put normal heads on it.
Worst thing is how it attaches the snare to the bass drum, which of course means tons of rattle. I've used an RT exclusively for 2 years now, although with a separate snare drum. The RT isn't in the same league as the Rogers kit I used in the 80s and 90s but it's great for lugging. I just use the 8" (tuned high) tom and the 12" tom (tuned low) and carry them nested with a bit of foam between them and wrapped in a towel in a green shopping bag :) Also, the 16" kick is really cute! (a lot cuter than I am ... and no, I'm not 8" tall :) ![]() BTW, nice work on the jazz tune, Bob. Last edited by Pollyanna; 06-01-2011 at 03:46 PM. |

I think Bo Eder posted a clip at some point of him playing his Safari with mesh heads. You might want to send him a PM. Otherwise, go for the RT. It at least can be a real drum kit, where the DW thing is just a set of practice pads. |

It looks like you get a different version of the Traveler in Sydney. The one I'm seeing in the States has a 8x20 kick and a 10, 12, 14 tom setup.

Curious to know if anyone's played both types and can do a comparison of the usual RT's shallow 20" kick and the RT Gig's deeper 16". |

There's two green shopping bags - one carries the RT toms (the 8" nests comfortably in the 12", using a piece of the protective packing that came with the new kit to separate them). Once nested, they're wrapped in a towel. The other bag takes my thone seat, Zoom H2 recorder, sticks, gaffa tape, mini tambourine and water. Those bags are sturdy and useful things - if you're not worried about being elegant. |
