Lately I've been changing my mind... now I actually prefer steel snares, why I don't know. In the studio at school they have a Pearl Export snare in steel, I think it's 14" by 6.5" and it sounds fantastic. But last Tuesday it sounded bad, I guess someone were fixing with the tuning - ah, rage!

There is no vs, they're all suited to different musical applications & personal taste, & that's the beauty of the instrument. It's also why we keep buying the bloody things, lol!

A snare made of dark matter would be most enlightening.

I own a 14"x5,5" steel and a 14"x6,5" birch. The steel with diecast hoops, blaster wires and a coated ambassador results in a dry, articulate, high-pitched, ringy, loud-cracking snare. The birch one with a double-ply ST head makes for a fatter, more full-bodied rock sound. As for a favorite material.. I don't know.. I still wanna get a 14"x5" sensitone bronze... a 14"x7" maple... a 14"x6,5" brass... Ohh.. so many flavours.. I love snares. :D Cheers. |

Has anyone ever used a basketball hoop as a batter rim? They allow you to work on your rebound when you do a rim shot...

Yeah, but that "wet" sound doesn't always work....
I don't dig the darkmatter shells because the heads dish out too easily on me. People complain about sticks breaking in a half hour, but one hit and the head is wasted?? Got rid of it, but it was the only time I got sucked in by advertising. Bronze is my favorite shell.

Yes... but Adamantium would be cooler. You could even cut an X in the side of the shell (with an Adamantium cutting disk of course).

But what material could you possibly use to make an Adamantium cutting disc?

Have always preferred wood snares. I'm a tuning hack, but, I have found that I can get a fatter sound from wood snares.

Yeh i'm the same as Frank. I actually enjoy tuning the snare to different tones and feels.
2 of my fav snares at the moment are a 13x7 10ply Maple and a 14x5.5 1/2inch thick Padauk. The 13 gives me a nice crack and sounds clear and precise. The 14 sounds very similar to a steel shell but with a bit more warmth. Plus with wood hoops, has a nice open tone :) |

I own both. But if I had to pick two of the most versitile drums I own or have ever heard,in terms of dynamic range,I'd have to go with my 70's Ludwig Black Beauty,5x14,brass shell, followed by my 47 Slingerland Radio King 7x14,single ply maple shell. My personal opinion only, but remember...you can NEVER have enough snare drums.....or toms.....or ....cymbals,,,,,,,,or Steve B |

I was thinking Kryptonite 'cause it's such a cool color (GRReeeeen baby).
However that gives Lex Luthor an unfair advantage over Superman if they both enter the Guitar Center Drum Off. |
