That's kinda pretty. Take some more shots of it once you get hoops and heads on it.

omg, it almost glows in the light LoL. in a dark room/venue it looks almost black, but with any kind of light on it you can reaaaally see the deep, rich purpleness lol. plus it has the best "mix" of a woody&metal snare sound

Shame the purple heart has to hide behind those honking doorknob lugs.

its just personal preference. I debated tubes with this one, but after looking through images of different segmented purple heart snares I saw they ALL had tube lugs. No doubt that looks great, I wanted to go towards a different rout. Big n Beefy. plus they match well with the all chrome trick throw I put on it.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Natural whole wood goodness, no colors, no processing. The real thing. I'm in awe.

Looks beautiful finished up. I like how the slender tube lugs match the delicacy of the grain. Zebrawood always brings glamour to the party. Nice job! :)

My 6x14 HD walnut stave. Love this drum.
And a quick question. I have a mapex black panther snare that I never use and think I am buying a cherry stave shell and transferring the hw to it from the mapex. The cherry shell is undrilled but has edges and beds cut. The stave shell is 6x14 and the mapex is 6.5x14. How do I determine where to drill on the stave shell? Instinct says to measure from the top of the bearing edge to the center of the lug holes on the mapex and duplicate that on the cherry shell and also measure the distance from hole to hole on the mapex and then again duplicate that on the cherry shell. Sorry if this is a stupid question or if it is derailing thread. There are so many quality builders posting in this thread that I got inspired to try my hand at drilling. Maybe I will gain enough confidence to try from scratch depending on the success of my first project. Thanks in advance. |

Swamp Ash. What makes this different from White Ash, which I have all over my property and area. The stuff I have is not really something I would want to build a drum out of, but this Swamp Ash has a deep mahogany colour which my local ash does not, it more resembles birch. Was this dead wood, hence the term swamp ash?

Uniongoon...It is the same stuff from which they build telecasters. Could be white ash. The tone is fantastic, (though not as twangy as yout typical tele ;-)). The wood makes for great drums however. sizes are sn: 13x5, toms: 12x6, 14x8, 16x12; bass 20x16. Snare and rack toms are ~3/8" thick and the ft and bass are ~1/2 inch thick.

Hi,
Really nice drums, here! I got my self a nice shell too for a freefloater. This is the hardest wood there is, its got many names but maybe Ipe is the one to use. I put a wax on it and rubbed with some 'metal fiber' dont know how to call it in english. Polish is not too shiny. A

Posted elsewhere too, but it belongs here :) 13" x 4". This one's going to a special customer in the USA. Bubinga stave with maple highlights, bubinga segmented hoops. The shell bubinga and the hoop bubinga are taken from the same board. The shell is taken from the inner heartwood, so it's dense. The hoops are taken from the outer heartwood (not sapwood) so they're less dense. This was deliberate to take some mass out of the hoops. Hard wax finished & buffed.
