Here is another one for my stable. 7X14 Walnut stave with a wafer thin mappa burl maple inlay, puresound 24 brass strainer, allstar posts with polished aluminum tubes, DW 3 way butt and throw off, die cast hoops. This was my first ever attempt at an inlay, not perfect, but I am happy still with the result, sounds good too.

More jaw-dropping drum porn. The one on the bottom looks like it grew on a tree, just like that - some kind of exotic tree that produces snare drums as fruit.

Another walnut stave, this one was covered with some thinly sliced maple burl. The veneer had some dips and valleys, filled and sanded many many clear coats to smooth it out, became futile really, but looks pretty good from 10 paces.
![]() And I finally finished this birdseye maple snare, installed the vent, matched the tension rods and I drilled and put tiny gold wood screws through the claws so they would be supported better under pressure.

That gold looks so good when new, but man it sure can get ugly. Good luck with the resto, finding time is the hardest for me. I have so many shells uderway, no time to finish right now.

Swiss, that is deliteful. Now that says it is a maple shell, but that exterior is not maple, unless it has been creatively stained, looks exotic whatever it is.

Yes, deliteful, lol! Well, on second thought I'm not sure if the finish really belongs in this
thread, because it's actually engineered veneer. So it's realy and natural wood, but it doesn't grow like this. |

Crazy! Never seen anything like that.
As the originator of this thread, I have taken on the role of determining what qualifies as a natural finish. This qualifies! As long none of the wood is stained, dyed or artificially colored, then it is a natural wood finish. Even if several woods are somehow sliced up and pressed together like this apparently is. |

Those could all be natural woods. Do you know what kinds of woods they are? That is really extraordinary.

nor what kind of wood they use. Generally I guess there's more manipulated wood finishes that are labelled natural today than we might think. Which is kind of sad, but in the case of my veneer, or also veneers like walnut burst, it's at least more obvious in the first place. |

KIS, do you know more about manipulating wood veneers? What do you think
how many finishes are manipulated today, say from ALPI? I mean apart from some obvious ones... |

I'm really not liking manufactured representations of nature. Don't get me wrong, some of them look very cool, it's just not for me. As an example, compare the images on these two site pages, & take a wild guess which I would choose :) http://www.cookwoods.com/lumber-site...cobolo/page/2/ http://www.alpi.it/uk/ListaProdotti.asp?IDSC=14 |

And while I'm on the subject of forum members, I've just sent this picture to the same forum member. Probably the nicest cocobolo steam bent shell I've ever seen (unfinished). In fact, there's a whole traditional sizes bop kit worth of unfinished shells sitting in the kiln right now, hmmmm :)

I think oil (danish or tung, not lemon oil, motoer oil etc.) is not only OK, but good for the wood. I feel the inside needs some treatment, however with snarees especially, a hard coated like clear urethane, poly etc. will not do the acoustics any favours IMO, a more natural rougher finish will give you more control and bottom end. Danish oil penetrates and protects the wood without making it hard and reflective. I also use bees wax on occasion over the oil.

Insane! I'd like to see it under brighter lighting. Not many woods are so colorful in their natural state.
