Default Wooden Hoops - "Dressed" or "Naked"???

I'm a newb to the concept of wooden snare hoops. Just ordered a set off a local (to Oz) guy who makes his own. I bought them as advertised ("raw" finish) at a great price. The craftsmanship looks flawless, but as stated, the wood is untreated, in that there is no lacquer/varnish or any other coating on the hoops.

Needless to say, it had me wondering.....what is "the norm" when it comes to wooden hoops? For you guys/gals that use them....are yours finished off by way of some sort of lacquer coating or are they "raw"?

Any benefits or pitfalls to either/or? I have searched and read multiple threads on the value of wooden hoops.....alas, this is not a discussion I've encountered on my travels though.

Over to you guys who are "in the know"......what say you all?

I would simply use tung oil on the wood.
Apply whenever needed.

Unless you are set on staining and finishing the tung oil is a great sealer to use and is recommended by drum Mfg as well such as: DW.

An oil finish makes sense. The sealant properties will help keep the wood stable in varying weather and prevent it from drying out and cracking. A lacquer or urethane finish would likely crack from impact over time.

That was certainly a concern with using a more rigid finish like lacquer/varnish. Tung oil sounds like just the treatment I was looking for. I'm certainly not opposed to the raw finish from an asthetic stance, but I don't want them splintering after a few dozen rim shots either. If the Tung oil will promote some longevity, then that's all I require.

Thanks for chiming in fellas!!

Cheers.

My first experiment with wood hoops was unvarnished and they splintered around the holes and dented easily. (I was playing maple hoops with maple sticks. Maple is easy to dent as it's quite soft - if I was playing with oak or hickory stick I think the hoops would have come of a lot worse). I put several coats of extra tough matt wood floor varnish on my second pair and had no problems.

PFOG - out of curiosity, where'd you get them from? Wasn't aware of any local people making / selling wood hoops... I've only seen them in Hydes or ebay thus far.

It was an ebay sale mate. But here's his website: http://www.disturbancedrums.com/

Only spoke to him via ebay messaging, but lovely guy. Exceptionally helpful and very friendly.

PBM....thanks for your input mate. This is just the sort of feedback I'm looking for. Great stuff!!

IDDrummer is right. Lacquer will most likely crack. I would do a bunch of tung oil coats and apply more, later, when needed.
