This has not been the best year for me, lots of death, moving and missed opportunities. To make a long story short, my over sized Gretsch Catalina Club Rock drums are no longer practical. So, I've decided that it's time to part company with them. So I have a few questions. 1. I bought the drums used in almost new new condish last year for $500 (tiny scratch in the mounted tom wrap). I've taken very good care of them and they've never even left my basement. How much I should be able to get back for them? I'm thinking $300. 2. Can you guys give me some suggestions for what to look for now. I know I've been trumpeting the whole buy used cause (which I'm going to attempt) but, to be honest, this one I'd kinda like to buy new. I was thinking about the Custom Classic Birch jazz kit which I've heard nothing but good things about or the much evangelized Sonor Safari. They would be close to the same price for me so I'm not sure. Thanks guys. |

If you paid $500 a year ago and nothing has changed why not try to get that again? Of course you can save money going used, but if you can afford what you want get it.
Also, what is with the Custom Classic drums? They look cheap. Not inexpensive, but cheap. Where are they made? Can I see a video of someone playing them. It looks to me like you would be moving to an inferior kit. Have you looked into the Catalina Jazz or the new Stage Custom Jazz? Those are stellar kits for the price. |

I have a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit, and I really like it. So do the guys I play with. They go for $650 almost everywhere. Peace and goodwill.

Well. I've looked around and I'm thinking that I'm gonna have to go with that Sonor Safari. I used the search function on here and really the praise is universal. $339 bucks for a kit that pretty much solves all of my problems (portable, small, can be quiet), yes please. Thanks guys for all of your insight.
This thread was pretty pointless really, now that I think about it... |

I had a Gretsch Catalina Jazz (actually 2 of them) and recently purchased a Sonor Bop kit.
They sound as good or even better than the Gretsch's and the hardware and build is MUCH better in quality all for around 150.00 cheaper. I have the Bop kit now and am going to get a Safari also!!!! Leave the stock heads on, they sound real good right out of the box. |

The Sonor Bop kit is a much better deal. But I already have my little Gretsch kit, and I am going to keep it. If I was buying one today, I would get the Sonor. Peace and goodwill.

I also think that the Sonor Bop kit would be better for what you want it for.
I also agree that you could sell your Cat Rock for close to what you paid for it. I bought the Safari but I already own kits with 22 inch, 20 inch, and 18 inch bass drums. The Safari fills a specific need for me.

Is it the 26 or 24 bass drum cat? If it's the 26 I'd try to get what you payed out of it on craigslist. I own a CC with the 26 and personally I'd never part with it. For being an import kit it's served me on tour and held up like a champ, and I can see someone looking for big drums scooping that up for 5 bills.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking that I'm going to look into the Sonor Bop set soon.
I did decide to hold on to the cats, though. Last night I was putting the unused stock heads back on them for selling purposes, and after I tuned them up, there was no way I could sell it. There is just something about that set, I feel like a little kid playing them (and not just because of my ineptness). I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I have to make it work. Sorry for wasting your guys' time. |

I didn't realize you wasted anyone's time....you explained your needs/desires and asked for advice. You considered the advice given. You made a decision that both suits you, and makes lots of us nod and go...yeah, me too.
That's what the board is for. There are plenty of examples here of time wasting posts...yours is not one. |
