Default Re: Top 5

This is too hard. I don't think this way. I think more in terms of favourite performances of drummer / band / album etc. So I say this with no certainty:

Bands:
Pink Floyd
The Beatles
King Crimson
Steely Dan
Queen

Drummers:
Steve Gadd
Bill Bruford
Airto (actually a percussionist but he drums on RTF's first album and it's my fave drumming ever)
Ringo
Bonzo

Somehow I missed Stewart Copeland, John Densmore, Brian Blade, Elvin, Mitch Mitchell, Moonie, Michael Giles, Pretty Purdie, Gene Krupa, Sol Amarfio, Rick Marotta, Art Blakey, Jim Hodder, Jack Dejohnette, Chris Cutler, Harvey mason, Phil Collins, Joe Morello, Billy Cobham, Terry Bozzio, Steve Jordan, Tony Allen, Don Alias, Peter Erskine, Barriemore Barlow, Ian Paice, Nick Mason, Aynsley Dunbar, Will Calhoun, Prairie Prince, Ginger Baker, Charlie, Mick Fleetwood, Karen Carpenter, Paul Thompson, Chester Thompson, Steve Smith, Narada, Jeff Porcaro, Vinnie, Danny Seraphine, Robert Wyatt, Damon Che ... it's a travesty!!

Albums:
Live in Pompeii (Floyd)
Discipline
Abbey Road
Return to Forever
The Royal Scam

Somehow I'm missing out on Aja, Countdown to Ecstasy, Katy Lied, Sgt Pepper, Dark Side, Roxy & Elsewhere, Shiny Beast, Shamal, L, Grace, Led Zep 1, II & IV, Stop Making Sense, Blow by Blow, Electric Ladyland, Are You Experienced, Deep Forest, Mingus, A Night at the Opera, Best of BB King ...

Guitarists:
Jimi
Jeff Beck
Dave Gilmour
Robert Fripp
Uncle Frank

I hate not mentioning John McLaughlin, BB King, SRV, Brian May, Steve Hillage, Eric Clapton, Santana, Steve Hunter, Tommy Bolin, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore etc etc.,

Bassists:
Jaco
Paul McCartney
Tony Levin
John Wetton
Prakash John (for his playing here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqyv87h_zNA

(as usual, lots missing, ie. where's Roger Waters, Greg Lake, Ron Carter and Stanley Clarke??)

Keyboardists
Herbie Hancock
Keith Jarrett
Joe Zawinul
Eddie Jobson
Mirette Giraudy

No Chick, Richard Wright, George Duke, Michael Cotton, Vince Welnick, Stomu Yamashta, Klaus Schulz ...

Sax
Wayne Shorter
Michael Brecker
Mel Collins
Trane
John Helliwell

I don't like leaving out Stan Getz and Paul Desmond. Never got into Bird despite his huge talent. And I love Captain Beefheart's weird tootlings.

Vocals:
Freddie Mercury
Jeff Buckley
Dusty Springfield
John Lennon
Annie Lennox

Bravo Polly!! Quanto tiempo le trado escribir eso mate?

I suppose I should translate to be polite to all you uncultured lot...

Mira Che! Eres un hombre de buen gustos amigo.

Trans: Look Che! You are a man of good tastes!
"Che" is a Spanish diminutive interjection (a vocative expression) commonly used in Argentina. A form of colloquial slang used in a vocative sense as "friend", and thus loosely corresponds to expressions such as "mate", "pal", "man", "bro", or "dude"; as used by various English speakers.(Wikipedia)

Gracias hermano! y tu eres un vergatario (lo máximo, supremo) a lo Venezolano....me hiciste reir!!!

Trans: Thank you brother! and you are a vergatario (the best, supreme) to a Venezulan... you made me laugh.

Existe una conexión entre hablar español y 1970 de rock pesado? :)
Trans: Is there a connection between speaking Spanish and 70's heavy rock?

Polly, actually that should read "Rock pesado DE 1970" I understood, very impressed.

Ok, back to our regularly scheduled thread before one of these angry golf playing drummers from Phoenix call INS on us...

Very good Polly! you are a supreme. That's it, we like hard rock a lot, and heavy metal as well. (eye picked) You are half Venezuelan and half Argentinian + Aussie = dangerous mix.

Ian, I'm guessing you are saying that I am a pizza ... in Spanish it seems that I'm Vegetarian and in English I'm a Supreme (with anchovies?) :)

If I was choosing my top 5 albums as a teen about 35 years ago it would be something like this:

Machine Head
Pinups
Black Sabbath
Led Zep 1
DP in Rock

Cómo cambian los tiempos!

It's funny. I have almost no interest in hard rock these days but when I hear the old Purple, Sabs etc it always gives me a nostalgia buzz.

Yep, I was really keen Sabs's first album, especially the title track ...

Pinups was David Bowie playing old covers with a crack band including the mighty Aynsley Dunbar. Heaps of great covers - Here Comes the Night, See Emily Play, I Wish You Would, Sorrow (my band plays the Bowie version), Friday On My Mind, Don't Bring Me Down, Shapes of Things - it rocks!

Gracias Polly! It´s a good refresher about Pinups and Bowie.

Purple, Zeppelin and Sabbath never die! They live forever through the years...the essence of rock.

Ian ...oops, we'll have to knock one of those albums / bands out of my teen list. I forgot that I went totally nuts over Queen in 1973 after seeing this clip on a Saturday morning music show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPe0hhyUCx0

I saw them playing live from the front row a few years later and I'm not sure any show before or since made me happier. Can't forget Queen when talking about classic hard rock acts.

WOW!!!...Thanks Polly! for bringing this song out of the old classic rock chest.

You and Queen just blew me away with LIAR, that song is from Queen I, isn't it? The four of them (Freddie, Brian, John & Roger) were amazing, brilliant.

The rhythmic marriage between John and Roger must be one of the greatest back in the 1970's...really like the open-hand playing of the cowbell and hi-hat entry, basic drum triplet, fills and quick drum solo, voice and guitar.

I hope you like it:

I've never heard Steve Jordan play jazz - more blues and funk. Love his playing tho.
