Dude I love that kit! You have a nice mellow little setup, one up one down, creamy white, just a few cymbals, then BAM, huge 28x24" bass drum. Bet it sounds killer!

Acrylic is nice too. They have all these fancy see through colors now, but you can;t beat the looks of clear see though with gold hardware.

Cool kit DMC, looks great. (I like the leopard seat too lol)

Did those lugs and tension rods come with it or did you put them on? Either way they look fantastic.

Thanks. The lugs came with the set and are a proprietary design, single point tube lugs. They minimize penetrations into the shell and expose more of the shell to view. The lugs pivot a bit, allowing for slight variation in hoop/claw placement, but they do not rattle.

my kit: built by me, jelly bean sparkle, all keller maple.

sizes:

kick: 20x20
first rack tom: 10x7
second rack tom: 12x8
first floor tom: 14x14
second floor tom: 16x14
The set looks very mismatched. Is that on purpose?

Why are the lugs moved closer to the reso side on the toms, but closer to the batter side on the bass? Does this have to do with tuning or the sound?
I'm no expert on lugs and other hardware :p It looks like a very interesting design though.

You know, I have never noticed that! I don't think that makes much difference. I could ask the builder and see if there is a reason.

These drums come without mounting hardware and require suspension mounting. Due to the single-point lugs, I assume you want to have the lugs bolted to the shell near the suspension mount, to reduce stress on the long lug tubes. It shows off more of the bass drum shell to have them bolted near the batter side of the bass drum. Those are the only reasons that come to mind.

Yeah that makes sense. Let me know if you get an answer from the builder, I'd be interested to hear.

If you look at DMC's drum set, the lugs are moved towards the batter side on the bass drum, but towards the reso side on the toms.
What more is there to explain?

It seems to me that there would be a lacking of adjustability on the snare side head with the very short tension rods.

Beautiful wood, I've always preferred darker to lighter, and the stripes look outstanding. Don't really care for the lugs, but a great looking snare nonetheless.

Cool idea, but the rim looks bent... I'm assuming that it's just a weird picture angle or something, or is it really bent?????

yes that was the only thing that was kinda scaring me (having it be unplayable/untunable*) but you can still crank the bottom for higher tunings, but this drum sounds the best tuned medium-medium low

lol yeah that rim is horribly bent but is being replaced soon!

thanks!

I guess this will be custom by the time it is done.
$20 maple shell off ebay

Re did the bearing edges, trued it up on a slab of marble with 80 grit paper attached, filled all unused holes with hardwood, applied a flame birch veneer,

used donor lugs off an old CB 700 kit, and bought some gibraltor wood hoops soon to be stained to match.

The lugs sit a little too tight to the shell for the wood hoops, so I made these shims to get them 1/8th further out of the shell. More to come.

I finished up that snare today. Started out as sort of a joke, I bid $9 on it and won it, So I thought I would mess around and see if I could build a wood hoop snare on the cheap. With the new heads I have $200 invested. I have never owned or played on a wood hoop snare, it makes me want to play rudiments.
Sounds really thick, woody, miliatary, warm and sensitive.

I was waiting on a back ordered butt plate, so I dug this old Hollywood unit out of the garage. Works well, and makes centering the snare wires a breeze.

And set up with my Hybrid snare behind it.

Oooh, I like the fabric wrap on that drum. Don't know if it really works with those spiky lugs though. It's like a punk rocker wearing an apron.

Oh man those lugs are sick!
Gotta agree with red menace though, the fabric wrap doesn't really work with them. But stick those babies on a hammered brass snare, and you'vr got one gnarly lookin snare.

How did you make them?

Also love the finish.
Well, Dave Conaway made the drums:p (he's a member on here somewhere). As for the heads, I drew on the backside of the mylar with sharpies. For the bass drum head I drew on the front with a metallic paint marker.
