Amb over Amb or Emp over Amb are tried and tested head combos, mate. If you're looking for that universal drum sound, these will get it for you.

I don't know about anyone else's experience, but I'm finding Diplomats are becoming harder and harder to find.

Remo Diplomat resonant heads are probably popular with some folks, but I always liked the slightly lower frequency and ballsier quality from a 1 ply 10 mil head, Remo Ambassador or Evans G1 clear. My Gretsch Renown toms came equipped with a 7.5 mil resonant heads and when I switch them to 10 mil, I got the quality of sound I was looking for. A good quality single or double ply head over a 10 mil resonant is pretty much the go to standard.

Evans G2 over Evans G1- great sound, great range of tuning, great quality. Oh yeah, they also cost less than Remo...

Oh yea I wonder why they cost less than Remo...because REMO is better, the KING. That's why the logo is a King's Crown not a stupid oval. Alright my friend if you want real sound, just let me know what you are looking for and I'll tell you what head combo by REMO to use.

Just to clear things up, their heads use to cost less. They raised their prices and we recently lowered ours due to increases in efficiency and waste reduction.

Hey there. As others said, I would go for an Ambassador or G1 reso head (single ply 10 mil).
In my previous kit I used to have ambs as resos, now I have a new kit and it came with diplomats.. I'm looking forward to change them as soon as I can. Diplomats are way too thin. Less mass = less energy = less resonance. Check out this Bob Gatzen's video about resonant heads: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2ibBol23hs It's wrong to think that a thinner reso will resonate more than a thicker one. Really, it doesn't. IMO, diplomats choke the drum. Anyway, that's only my opinion, and of course what doesnt' work for me may work for you. Hope it helps. Cheers. W T F ??????????????? |

As for the question, 10 mil heads top and bottom should give you a safe sound. If you can, buy your bottom heads, and two or so batters to try on just one drum. Good luck. |

Aquarian super 2's on top and aquarian classic clears on bottom. Super 2 is 2 ply with 5mil and 7mil and classic clear is basically an ambassador. Response and attack are closer to a 1 ply head, but the super 2's retain the durability of a 2 ply head.
I own them and they are great heads. |
