Default ROTO TOMS?

I was reading some information on lar's kit back in the day, I've always noticed that he never recorded with a resonant head on his drums. I always thought he pulled them off so he could jam the mic up inside... but this one website told me that he used Roto Toms and made me belive that he didnt just take the bottom heads off that he used roto toms. so i was talking to my local drum tech and he told me that roto toms are used in school marching bands and wernt used on kits back in the day. so i dont know what the website is talking about. anyone know anything about these roto toms or if i was right about lars taking off the head to record. thanks guys

No idea about the website........but I can tell you for a fact that roto toms were used on drum kits long before Lars started his recording career. Your drum tech is misinformed. Personally, I can't recall Lars using them though.....not to say he didn't, but I don't remember anything but power toms back in the day.

I first saw Roto Toms back in the late 70s.
I owned a set in 1979.
The patent was issued in 1977.
Here is a link http://www.rototomdrums.com/article_roto_tom_patent.htm
The Roto Toms were originally intended to be used inside of a drum shell

They were the same as they are today.
I had the Remo ones. 6,8,and10 inch.
They had no shell.
I used them as accent drums and Timbals.

Van Halen used to use them as toms on his kit.
I remember that well. He had all of the sizes up to 16 inch I believe.

I didn't use them that much.
During a solo I would fool with them.
I didn't like them that much.
They were bulky and they scratched everything that was near them.
The stand would wobble.
I put them away for about 20 years and about 5 years ago I threw them out or I gave them away after setting them up and playing them for a few weeks. I can't remember.
