Mind boggling music. There are lots of great drummers out there but no one knocks me out the way Billy Cobham does. Ever since I bought Birds of Fire in the mid 70s he's been my go to guy when I'm in the mood for the ultimate drumming buzz. Don't have a clue what he's playing half the time but it sounds incredible. Which drummers leave you in that "whoa!" space? Please provide links when you post. It's Christmas and a drumming feast is in order :) |

To me, the ultimate rock drummer, & as near as you'll get to a complete drummer, IMHO. The all time master of dynamic, reserve & control. Check out this lesser known clip.
Not the best sound, but just eat up that dynamic & single kick drum placement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtJ-T...eature=related Groove, syncapation, accuracy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtjKW...eature=related A different side to Simon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtjKW...eature=related A young Simon having fun with Louis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuYj7KjyJg0 & who can forget his contribution to the Toto story:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keOyl...09ABF&index=28 Last edited by keep it simple; 12-11-2010 at 05:14 PM. |

Groove, groove, groove ... the stuff that sounds easy to do, when in reality it's not.
To this day it's gotta be Al Jackson jr. http://www.drummagazine.com/features...d-of-60s-soul/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCAmYRjAXrQ |

All your recommendations are awesome. Whenever I feel the need to remind myself how far I have to go, any one of those on your list will do!
My favorite for years has been this man too. Here he is playing one of my favorite tunes with guitarist David Walker, the great Bernard Purdie... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCyRPCojb2Q |

Nice work, lads. I like the different angles people have taken. Love that Bernard P clip where he explains his ghost notes - just grooving along while he spoke as naturally as chatting over a meal or through the bathroom door.
When it comes to groove, randomname posted this clip here a while ago - Tony Allen's touch and feel amazed me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngxaUjIYX1Y MikeM posted this Papa Jo clip a while ago and it left an indelible mark on me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrKShqNkcnI. He plays the solo like a magician pulling a rabbit out of the hat. And Thaardy, yep, Benny Greb always does me damage. Freakish focus. Here's some more mad Billy C intensity, just love the heat he generates ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujcYw2QTPzM |

Per Lindvall blows my mind everytime because he has to me the best beat in the world and a back beat that would stand the test of a nuclear bomb. Not to mention his fills (headphones recommended): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUpVNPkupQY
Steve Jordan for just beeing so incredibly funky: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOwt8...eature=related Jeff Porcaro and his unique feel, fills and his way of always playing the perfect part for the song. I can always tell when its Jeff playing just by listening to his groove. Stunning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvE3PXivWRw&feature= Torstein Lofhus for one day doing a gig like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeWZgqtsdSE and the next day playing with Shining: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qslyq8CcXu0 FP |

To me the definitive Jazz trio recording …
The Ahmad Jamal Trio live at the Pershing 1958, the interplay between Vernel Fournier on drums and Israel Crosby on bass is just stunning! Deceptively simple it captures the essence of flawless timing punctuated with low key accents, that are as one with the bass lines. The sound recording quality of the instruments in particular the cymbals is the stuff of legend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f28V_xoEpMM

Miles talked a lot about the influence Jamal and his trio had on him in his autobiography. Last edited by 8Mile; 12-12-2010 at 05:24 PM. Reason: I said I liked Israel Crosby's playing with Bill Evans; I was thinking of Chuck Israels. Oops! |

I've learned so much by watching Martin Periard. His style is so relaxed and looks almost effortless. This is his channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/MartinPeriard2009

Seen a fair bit of Mike, a lot of people know him only from WFD but his actual musical drumming is pretty damn cool.

Terry Bozzio has some pretty good chops, he makes a drum kit on it's own sound like a full blown composition.

this guy:
Marky Ramone http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/inter...helped_me.html on Drum Technique (wait for it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2cMi5FTXEs Marky Ramone will give you a heart attack...if you can even keep up. i should have known that he had more going on than punk. his early band Dust was like Metal with Funk drumming. early 70´s. amazing. believe it or don´t...Ramones songs actually got FASTER as the decades went by. check out Blitzkreig Bop or She´s The One or Bad Brain from the 70´s then 80´s then 90´s. he also has more technique than one would think. She´s The One studio (1978) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Ql6...eature=related 1980 Paris http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA6fY...eature=related 1989 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU_oP...1&feature=fvwp that´s a single pedal, yall.

if you are referring to drummers who are influenced by him, you are probably right. remember...he INVENTED punk drumming...with an assist from Tommy Ramone. the next generations always take it further.

In the 70s I remember buying a Larry Coryell album, putting it on and being confronted by this madness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXa5PAz6dxc ... Al Mouzon on drums.
I was very happy :) Liked the Ramone link, UnFunky. I never realised he was such a strong player. Bill Ward link was cool too - he tears it up in that brief snippet of Rat Salad at the end. The 2nd Dicenso link was smoking too. |
