Hey, here's my Drum! Magazine piece from last month. It's a unit for developing grooves in the style of Cissy Strut, as highlighted in Stanton Moore's new book, Groove Alchemy. Moore discussed a key thing often missed about the groove- that the hi-hat is played with both hands, and I came up with a little interpretive method for running with this idea using Syncopation.
If you're going to work this up, I highly recommend working out of Reed (new edition lessons 4 and 12, plus the syncopation sets and long exercises), using the article only to illustrate the concepts. Feel free to PM any questions, or just ask them here. And PM me with your email address if you'd like the full-sized, color pdf.
