Default My Sq2 Drumkit

Hi guys,

last week i finally(!!!) got my new sq2-drumkit..
I know that a Sq2-Drumsystem is nothing special anymore.. I feel that every third person has a Sq2-Drumset today.. But, well...

After 6 years of collecting money I ordered a set with this configuration:

- Earth Finish
- Beech wood
- Chrome Hardware

Shells:
20x17 Heavy Bassdrum
08x07 Thin RackTom
10x08 Thin RackTom
12x09 Thin Racktom
14x13 Medium FloorTom
16x15 Medium FloorTom

My Cymbal collection:
- 13" K HiHat
- 16" & 18" K-Custom Dark Crash
- 18" Zildjian Z3 China
- 16" Oriental China Trash
- 20" K Ride
- 18" Avedis Crash
- 18" A-Custom Crash
- 20" Paiste China (with some riffles - selfmade)
- 10" Stagg HiHat (very nice)
- 08" Zildjian ZHT HiHat
- 20" Vintage Ride (don't know the brand..)
- 20" Meinl Headliner Ride (just decoration ;) )
- 16" Zildjian Avedis Crash
- 12" Zildjian Oriental China Trash
- 10" Zildjian A-Custom Splash
- 8" Zildjian K-Custom Dark Splash
- some Custom Chimes...

not everything is on the set =)

For that I got some snares:
- 14x05 Sonor Artist Snare (Vintage maple)
- 14x05 Sonor Performer Snare (steel)
- 14x5.5 Sonor Force Snare (steel)
- 14x6.5 Sonor Force 2000 Snare (wood..)
- 13x03 Newsound Wood Snare
- 10x05 Magnum Snare (xD)

Hardware:
- Pearl Dr503 Rack
- Sonor Giant Step Doublepedal
- Sonor 600 HiHat
- Sonor 400/600 Cymbal Stands

Here are some photos:

I'm curious about your opinion :)

All the Best
David

Do I detect an ever-so-slight Gavin Harrison influence? :-)

Great looking kit, mate!

Yes you did!
But to be honest:
I used this ShellConfiguration a few years before I got to know Gavin Harrison.
Also I got my K-Custom Cymbals before I knew him..
Of course I was impressed and cutted some chimes ;)

Even if every third person has an SQ2, I don't think anyone has one like yours. Play it happily and with pride!

I love everything about your kit, but personally I can't stand the finish. But that's ok offcourse, you're the only one that has to love it, and obviously there are more people that love it :-). Most important thing is that you can finally sound the way you want and have all the options you want when you're drumming.

Hi Kalma

Amazing kit!!!, the finish is stunning and the sound may be impressive too!

Personally don´t have experience with beech wood. What do you find in beech sound over traditional maple??

thanks in advance, and congratulations!

Thanks for the replies!

I never thought So many people like that finish :)

@Frank0072 i can understand your dislikes.
The finish is very(!) special i think and relly needs to be wanted.. (makes sense?)

And as you said; i have to like itm;) :)
And i love it. I think a sq2 is an unique and special set and need to have a special and also unique finish.
I know only 2 persons who use and like this finish.

@gus:
What do I find in beech wood against maple:
I soundchecked a few sets at a store.. And for me the beech wood shells have a more "bassy", what i like very much. It makes the sound a bit more full and warm i think!
Maple is a classic wood of course, but i liked to try sth new.
Also i was convinced to hear some nervy overtones in the maple shells. (Maybe just a delusion...)

I'm going to upload a little soundcheck file today!

Thanks!!

So the sound is not the best but.. well... i think the sound is ok to get the volume and power of the drumkit! enjoy!

Hey Kalma- now seeing more of the drums- I actually hate the finish up close.

But love it from a distance! I guess its like a Monet- get too close to his work and you see its just a collection of smudges and crap. Yet step back and you see the whole picture.

It will look fantastic on stage under lights etc

I definitely like the looks of this kit. You also certainly have the right kit for your playing and abilities. Great little sound clip as well. I love the LS-10. I use one of those myself. It does such a great job of capturing high-volume stuff without clipping. Great on-board preamps.

Very nice Kalma !! That finish is so cool , ... I just wish they would offer a few different color combos like they have with the "Tribal". Also, I think Sonor should of done the edges of your bass hoops in black or green.

Hi artstar:
Thanks for your reply.

They only offer the tribal finish in red/black.. I wanted my sq in black/white but they won't make it for me...

I don't get what you mean about the hoops.

Thanks

Love the Brand, Love the sound, Love the set up. But the finish looks like Art-Deco-Camoflauge. I guess it will grow on us, but it is yours, so enjoy. and congrats on the new Sonor

Yes, you have to configurate it on the sq2-configurator online because sonor needs the UPID of your config!

Nice set up. Like some of the guys said I can see some Gavin Harrison...

...but I think your sizes are closer to Steve Smith. Plus its beech like Steve too.

I play an S Classix and I hope to get an SQ2 soon. From all that I've heard and seen I'm actually beginning to think that an SQ2 in beech is the best kit money can buy. Just listen to Steve Smith or Benny Greb's kit. There are no other kits I've heard that comes close. Have you heard Benny's new signature snare? Check it out on youtube. Sounds like THE snare.

How are you finding the Giant Step? I'm playing a single at the moment and I'm loving it...I'm gonna get a double in the new year.

Well done on the kit! Be sure to post any videos or recordings that you do. I wanna hear that kit in action.

Yes i've heard that snare. I actually played it before it was for sale :) Great snare.

But: A sq2 is actually not another kit like an delite or an s-classix. If you configurate your sq2 like a delite or s-classix you have the same kit, just more expensive.

I really like the Giant Step pedals. They feel very smooth and even I'm not a real doublebass player i can play great stuff on it. :)
I always want to check out an Axis-pedal but i can't find it anywhere..

Wow, stellar sounding kit. No muffling right? Damn nice tuning. I'd go a little higher personally but man you have a good sound, and I like your playing too! Hey I'm German too!

Believe me, where I am, it's more like every 100th person has a Sonor Kit. You just don't see them in the big box stores.

Damn you're a good player! I'm listening as I'm typing this! Just gorgeous sound, best I've heard in a very long time. I really have to try the Sonors, something about the way Germans build things...Oh and another vote for the Olympus LS10. That thing rocks, and it can take a drop.

Thanks larryace!!

No there's no muffling on the toms, it's just the "first-time-tuning". It changed a bit and now the sq2 sounds still a way better =)

You're german too? Where are you from?

Thanks for the compliment! Did you listen to the soundcheck?
The sound is pretty good i think but i'm not sure if it's possible that this was the best sound you heard in a very long time :-O
If so, i'm pretty amazed =)

all the best guys!

Well German heritage I should say, I'm a disgusting American actually. Yes I listened to the soundcheck. You tune drums real good. I'd like to hear more clips if you tweaked them. I like drums with a lot of attack. They sound like unmuffled single ply heads to me, are they? I'd like to hear them tighter though, just to see what happens to the tone.

That kit is just insane. The finish is so different, but definetley not in a bad way. All that gear must have cost a pretty penny but just by lookin at ur kit, I can tell its worth it

They used to do Tribal in White/Black. About your kick hoops, I was referring to the tips/edges. They are "natural" or un-finished. They should of done them in black or green to compliment your finish.

This was the White/Black Tribal :

Hi David.
Fantastic kit. I love your wood choice. Sonor beech drums are unparalleled. (I played a beech Sonorphonic today and it sounded amazing!). But I have to ask, why have you purchased such low end snare drums???? Your kick and snare are the main drums. Why do you have such gorgeous toms and such low end snare drums?

I love that finish. My 27 ply Artist beech has become known as "that blue snare".
