Okay, so I'll be sitting there bustin' out some funky groove I just came up with and when I go to do a fill I'm not too sure what to do so I just go and improvise it. Well, the problem with that is that sometimes I'll take my right hand and for whatever reason I slam the stick down onto my right leg. (Perhaps I'm thinking its another tom?) Right after doing this I need to stop playing and let out the biggest "OWWWWWWW!!!" I can muster. Then I normally laugh about it and go back to playing. So I'm just wondering has this odd thing ever happened to any of you? |

Do you practice warm ups and wrist movement exercises first? That helps me with coordination.

I think that would only happen once to me before I figured it out.

Yeah I usually warm up on the pad for at least a half hour or so before playing.

It seems to me that it is simply a matter of thinking ahead while you are playing.
That is why you sometimes hit your leg. Your brain hasn't given fully committed instructions to your right hand. I asume that you like to lead with your right when you start a fill. Try concentrating on thinking ahead while practicing.

Never.......but while we're confessing stupidity, I have to admit to hitting myself in the face or eyes with the drumstick more times than I care to mention. :-)

Not that, but for a while I had my snare a bit too close and would punch myself in the leg repeatedly whilst playing rim shots

I would suggest you mount some kind of percussion gizmo to your leg so it's not a wasted effort.

I've dinged myself a couple of times in the past. The most recent (and rather weird) incident I had was we were playing a show and some how I got my left stick caught under my hi-hat or snare and when I went to yank it out I dislocated my index finger and minorly tore a ligament. I did have a pre-exsisting injury to that hand and finger, but it's still a hard thing to explain to your doctor...not to mention your bandmates. :-) |

I've smacked my knuckles a lot- surprised I never fractured one- but never my leg/knee.

A couple of times my leg has filled in for a tom but I usually crack a knuckle open on my snare rim and oooh and awwww over the pretty blood splatter all over the snare head. Neat design, wish I had picture.

About 3 or 4 years. Although I did just adjust from a 5 piece to a 4 piece.

I've hit myself in the forehead a few times, I have no idea how it happens... And like someone mentioned, hitting the snare-rim with your hand hurts like hell!
My guitarrist friend is now standing to my left when were jamming, I occasionally flick sticks to my right when doing fills and one lucky stick hit him in the head once :) |

Yeah you should attach a trigger to your leg so at least it sounds like something.
