Default Crafting a stave drumset

I am going to craft a stave drumset, so what do you think about these drum sizes? 12'' x 7'' tt, 14'' x 12'' ft & 20'' x 18'' bd. I really like the Tama Hyperdrive concept in tom toms that the tom toms are very shallow so they have quick response and punchy sound. I am trying to get that same feel from 14'' x 12'' ft aswell. Bd is typical though :) I even haven't decided yet will I make wooden hoops or should I just buy regular metal hoops. I like to play rock/metal/prog music and sometimes even funk/fusion. Wood material is going to be either ash or mahogany. I'd like to hear your opinion!

Hi! Well, congrats for the idea, it's a very nice project. If it were my drumkit, I would make a 16x16 or at least 16x14 FT, I think that for playing loud rock/metal, a 14" floor tom just won't cut it.

About wood choice I don't know much. Please post pics as you make progress!

I will send some pictures.. but this project might take lots of time :) I'm still making my stave timbales (or octobans) with wooden hoops!

A 14 stave drum is equivalent to a 16 ply drum in volume and punch. Stave shells are thicker and the orientation of the grain makes them resonate much more.

Making stave drums takes a great deal of skill and good equipment. You must have a nice shop!

Folk education centre in my town keeps classes in junior high school building. That building is only about 6 years old so all the woodcrafting machines in the woodcrafting class are pretty new and very good. I have only 3h/week to craft my drums and I would like to do it much more!
I'm making at the moment two 6'' octobans with wooden hoops, one is 20 cm and another is 25 cm deep. I use 20 staves per drum but I could have made them with less but you always learn something new! :) Using Goat Willow as a tonewood and Mahogany as a hoop material. Will see what will be the result!
