Default Gretsch Renown 8 inch tom issues

I have always had trouble tuning my 8 inch tom on my set and today figured out why and wondered if any of you other renown owners have the same issue. The batter head is not seating properly because of the rubber grommets on the tom mount are too high and the edge of the drum head is sitting on one of these and not allowing it to rest on the bearing edge. Anyone else or any suggestions?? thanks

Is it a R.I.M.S. type mount? Maybe you could pop the grommets out and shave them with an X-Acto knife.

That was my first thought. The grommets are the same size for all of the drums and the 8 is the lightest so may be an 1/8th inch off may not matter.
