Default Decreasing Ride Decay

Hello everybody.

I recently bought a 25 year old Paiste 2oo2 20" Heavy Ride cymbal.

This cymbal is LOUD. I actually love it! I play metal, so it fits. However, the ride's decay, even after a regular ride hit (not on the bell, not on the edge) is too long! It can take around 20 seconds for it just to relax, and about 40 to become fully silent! Also, when you hit it hard, near the bell for example, the cymbal loses focus opens like a crash.

What can I do to decrease the decay and keep the cymbal's attitude, original sound and volume? I would also like to make the cymbal a little bit more focused. Is that possible? Thank you very much.

A small amount of masking tape draped loosely over the sound edge, will aid the decay.

I think you mean INCREASE the decay.

I've heard of some people using a small piece of tape on rides, or get a drier ride. Also note that, when playing with others, that wash probably won't be as noticable and will blend in well with the other things going on... If you're just practicing alone in your basement, then I feel your pain... I try to buy dry rides, as that's my story (yes, I'm a cheeky old-timer).

I'm sure some cheeky old timer who can afford it will tell you to go out and buy a new cymbal. I have the same problem with my ride and I do plan to replace it eventually but the solution I was recommended was to put a few pieces of tape on the underside of the cymbal.

I put two 6" pieces of masking tape on the underside and switched to 7a's for rehearsal now the wash hasn't been a problem. Also put a small strip of tape on the underside of the splash. I don't know how well this'll work when I use 5a's and play at stage volume but it's proven a cheap solution for the time being.

Go for masking tape: http://www.3m.com/us/mfg_industrial/...ing/index.html or painters tape: http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3.../Products/One/

Not as heavy, much easier to get off and won't leave sticky residue all over your cymbals.
