Default Mapex Meridian Maple- Coated vs. Clear

Hey guys, I bought the Mapex Meridian Maple (6 piece) about a year ago and I've been using the stocks heads that came with the drums since day one. I think they are Remo UT Pinstripes. I'm soon going to be purchasing new heads. However, I can't decide weather to buy coated or clear heads for my toms. I have already decided on Aquarian Super 2's as batter and classic clears as resonants for my toms. Nevertheless, I can't seem decide weather to go coated or clear. I'm an all around drummer, I like playing a lot of Rock, Funk, R&B, and Latin. I also play a lot of linear stuff. I want my toms to have a nice warm tone while having controlled resonance. Any Suggestions?

Did you like the sound of the Pinstripes, or would you have changed something about that sound if you could?

If so, what would you have changed?

I have a Mapex Pro M kit and swapped the stock heads to clear pinstripes on the batter and clear ambassadors underneath and I find that this combination gives a super warm tonal resonance combined with the maple shells.
As well the pinstripes last a long time compared to thinner heads,..you may want to try clear or coated emperors also...they are like pin stripe's minus the stripe and the coated head will give you a bit of attack verses the clear.

Hope this helps

Cheers

The Pinstripes were good at first, they had a bit more resonance than what I wanted but they did their job. However, now even after i tune my toms they sound dead as if there was very little tone.

I think if you want something with a little more control than a Pinstripe I'd go with coated batters for sure.

I'm using Aquarian Modern Vintage top and bottom and that combo is warm, mellow, and really dark, with good control.

Clear or coated Emperors, they will have a bit more resonance then the pin's and the coated will bite a bit more.If no amount of tuning will give your present heads what you want..then they are likely stretched beyond usability.
Good luck fellow Mapexian

a two ply head is most suitable option for you.

whenever you have trouble deciding between two heads , for example clear vs coated , get one of each , try them in your kit . and then buy the heads for the rest of your kit depending witch you've liked the most.
but if you really can't decide between coated and clear may be remo smooth white is the better option . they have a very smooth white coat so they sound in between a clear and coated head

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I'm probably going to go with coated Aquarian Super 2's as batters and classic clears as resonant. I might also try the Emperors.
