Default Do the 2oo2's really dent/break that easily?

I've heard this on many occasions on this forum and had to bring it up because the 2oo2's are some of my favourite cymbals. I love the 24" Big Ride and especially the 20" regular crash. Those are exactly the sort of sounds i want and it's a shame to hear such harrowing tales of the edge of the 2oo2 denting prematurely and breaking easily.

I know some of it has to do with 'technique' but i know people with fantastic technique who hit with glancing blows and all that stuff, but they've still broken much earlier than expected.

Just wondering what other peoples' experiences with them are and if it's worth shelling out for a cymbal that might not stand the test of time. And i'm a hard hitter.

xoxo

I have never broke a 2002 and I play in an amplified Classic Rock and Blues band that gets quite loud and I haven't had any issues. I don't try to hit through the cymbal, but with glancing blows .I also use cymbals sizes and types that are applicable to the music I am playing and the size of the room and the expected volume level. For example if you are playing in an extremely loud band, you may want to look into using 2002 Mediums as crashes or the Power Crashes and in larger diameters.

I own a 2002 18" crash that I bought new in the 80's.

other then 1 tiny dent on the edge, probably from mishandling on my part, no problems.

I don't think you'd have to worry long as you take care of your cymbals and use correct technique.

I'm a very hard player but i do so with glancing blows as much as possible.
I listened to the Medium and Power crashes online and wasn't particularly interested in them. I know that online sound samples aren't ALWAYS accurate but i have to say, Paiste's samples are very good quality and when compared to what i heard on mycymbal.com and what i heard in person at a drum shop, the thicker crashes dont seem to cut it for me.

They're plenty loud, and i like loud, but I'm looking for a crash that is very washy, not necessarily thin or medium thin but if need be it will, and that has enough to fill out the tonal spectrum. The Medium and Power crashes seemed like the sort of crashes that just have that high end sustain, as opposed to the middle-of-the-ground wash that i'm looking for from the 20" regular crash and the 24" Big Ride.

I hope that makes sense! I don't often have a lot of money and when i do i want to make my choice perfect.
xoxo

I have heard some drummers say they have never broken a Zil or Sabian but have broken a Paiste or played them till they died in a short amount of time,I have never owned a Paiste so I don't know, but if you are looking for a cleaner glassier shimmer maybe the Meinl Soundcaster or MB 10 would be an alternative, they remind me of paiste 2002's I have not heard the durability being discussed, but I have not heard anything bad about them durability wise.

I have been playing my 20 and 22 inch 2oo2 rides since about 1980 and they are in perfect health!
I have done everything that one can do to a cymbal with these pies. I even drilled seven rivets into the 22 inch ride to make it sizzle. I love it and I play it daily.
They do not dent and break!

In my experience yes they do dent easily around the edges. The only 2002 that I had no problems with was a 20" dry ride that was amazing. The ones that dented were the 2002 classic crashes and giant beat multis. I did not abuse them, and have never cracked or dented any other cymbals from any manufacturer and I have owned over 120 pies. I am sure someone will accuse me of bad technique which I assure is not the case.

Oh on a side note, I never had any trouble from the Signature series, they all held up fine with no dents.

I've had a bunch of 2oo2s and Signatures over the years.

I've never seen a Signature dent around the edges, but they have been more brittle and prone to breakage than other cymbals I've owned.

I haven't had any more trouble with 2oo2s cracking than with either Sabian or Zildjian but I have noticed the edge dents on the regular and Thin Crashes. I had a 20" Giant Beat for exactly one rehearal. I loved the way it sounded and played, but noticed the edge dents on that thing right away and returned it the next day. I've used 2oo2 Medium Crashes and currently use a 22" 2oo2 Ride and have never seen an edge dent on those.

What makes them break easier? B8, thinner edges, metal treatment?
