http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qm1WwoMY9E My snare is a 14x6.5 mahogany gretsch snare with coated emperor x on the batter side and a clear ambassador as the resonant head. Thanks. |

I am at work, shhhhh, so I can't watch the YouTube clip but one of the first things to remember is that the clip probably has been altered by amps and EQ's etc so the true sound may not be what you are hearing. Just something to keep in mind.

Looks like that guy has that kit taped up and choked, sounds that way too.
Is that kick a 26"? EDIT: I don't know how I feel ab this guy.....I didn't really appreciate this, seems like he's hunting for a groove: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kVSx...eature=related

That guy needs to be arrested for drum abuse. I wonder how many cymbals, sticks and heads he breaks yearly?

Seems like I started something here, haha :p Yeah sorry, I know they sound sort of dead, but for some reason I really like the sound of it :/

Those drums are tuned relatively high and muffled. You could use duct tape like he's using, or another idea is to get something like polyethylene foam (get the thinnest sheets you can find), and cut strips that are 2 or so inches deep and just slightly larger than your diameter size. Take your heads off, wrap the strip you cut around the inside of the shell (which is why you cut it a bit too big--so it will fit tight), and then put the head back on. If you have problems with the strips moving you can either put a bit of tape on them or you could actually cut them to fit the entire depth of the shell--so the same piece is touching your top and bottom heads. Here is an example of a place you can buy polyethylene foam from: http://www.closedcellfoams.com/polyethylene.html I would get the 1/4" thick sheet. If you go the duct tape route, by the way, and they're not dead enough for you, one trick that is often used is to tape a piece of gauze to the head--just get a roll of gauze or a gauze pad from the first aid section of a drug store. Oh, and also, with the duct tape route, you might find that Evans hydraulic heads give you a nice headstart. |

I would try an Evans genera dry batter head. Kinda removes all character from the snare, which is what his sounded like to me. Have to tune really high to get any pop at all. They sound..well..generic really. Kind of a shame to put one on a nice snare, though it calms my sensitone steel down nicely.

Well, OK, if you like them that dead, just muffle everything up to the max. Snare wires sounded pretty loose too. Just bear in mind, if you intend on playing live without mics, nobody will hear the drums!
