Default Head for 10" tom?

I just got Remo Pinstripe heads for all my toms except my 8" tom. They sound great except for my 10" tom. The pinstripe makes it sound bad, the 2ply is too much for the drum. What would be a better choice of head for the 10"? My 8" is a Coated Ambassador.

I'd try either an Ambassador or an Emperor for the 10" tom. Even though an Emperor is a two ply head it still will have less control and will sound less boxy than a Pinstripe on a 10" tom. The Ambassador will give you a nice open tone like you get from the 8" tom, but the 10" drum might sound a little thinner tone-wise when jumping to the larger, Pinstripe-equipped toms. The Emperor might help bridge that gap a little better.

Pinstripes sound bad in general on a 10" tom. The frequencies that they cut out on a drum are the frequencies that you want to hear on a 10" tom. Go with just about any other head. I've had luck with coated/clear ambassadors/emperors (all four combos), J1 etched, and renaissance heads. But pinstripes?--not good!

Lose the 10" tom and find the ultra rare 11" toms made by Tama a few years ago ;)
