Default Gloves Or Tape For Outside Gig

I play and ekit and use 7A sticks. I have no real preference in brand, as I buy according to feel.

Anyway...I play indoors all the time in air conditioning. However in a couple of weeks I will be gigging outside at 5pm! Yikes...should be nice and toasty by then.

So my concern is my hands getting sweaty and loosing grip on my drum sticks.

I was thinking of those Meinl fingerless gloves, but would those just make my hands sweatier? Or if I go with tape, what is a good tape that you guys would recommend?

I'll hang up and listen for my answer! lol

If you haven't ever tried it, you might consider using stick wax. I used to use pro-mark tape, but it adds more to the diameter of the stick than I prefer, and it's expensive. I started using Zildjian stick wax and it gives me a good grip and it's cheap. It wears off the stick after a while, but just re-apply and your good.

I know gloves are useful for many reasons (preventing injury, improving grip) but I think they look goofy.

Seriously,,,lightly sand the lacquer off of the sticks and you should be ok. I used to do that but now I play the Alex VH model sticks and they are already "natural"...see if that helps.

The best tape is Tennis Racquet grip tape. The 'Wilson' stuff is pretty thin. l'd check Wal-mart... cheap.

Wax is cool for a minute, wax picks up dirt and so waxed sticks end up a dirty, waxy mess.

Sanding sticks is good, then sweat adds to the grip, its when you don't sweat on sanded sticks that they become slippery.

If its hot gloves can be miserable, make you sweat more and unless your used to them, there's another monkey on your back while you're playing.

Do you have really sweaty hands?
If not, I wouldn't worry about playing outdoors all that much.

Here's one tip that works instantly.

Toilet paper.

It soaks up any moisture instantly and in seconds you can dry your sticks and hands and be ready for the next song IF your hands do get sweaty.

I've been putting a small roll on my floor tom leg for years and it works great.
I might grab it once, or at the most 2 times a gig and that's all it takes. Grab it and you're done.

Better than gloves, stick wax, or anything else 'extra' people can do to their sticks--and you don't have top spend any extra money!

Racquet or baseball bat tape at a sporting goods store is the cheapest way to wrap sticks. I used to use Gorilla Snot a long time ago but that stuff ends up messy after a while.

Now I use baseball bat tape.
