Default Breaking the rules of music

Okay, who likes listening to breaking the "rules" of music or who likes to break them themselves?

Okay so you might like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t80_eFghMdk

...and where can I find more of this kind of stuff?

Look up John Zorn, Buckethead, Mike Patton, Splattercell....that'll get you off to a good start. There are no rules.

One must truly know the rules of music in order to break them without it sounding like crap.

what the hell is that "bass" player playing? i've never seen anything like that. pretty crazy!

btw, in the world of music, anything goes. it's impossible to break the rules because their aren't any.

if you like that kind of wacky stuff, check out some of frank zappa's extensive works. he was a "rule breaker" long before breaking the rules was cool.

and if you want to go back even further, check out the works of composer john cage. that guy was *really* out there there when it came to "breaking rules".

Agreed, I was just going to say Zappa. Absolutely crazy. I don't know how someone comes up with music like that.

Whether there are rules or not is a matter of artistic opinion, but in the world of music, 'anything' doesn't go. If it did, every band and player would be universally revered.

True, anybody can do whatever they want. But they have no right to cry "rules" when nobody likes it.

That's a Warr guitar. Trey Gunn, of King Crimson, plays one ... while his bandmate Tony Levin, plays the Chapman stick.

Hi guys, I'm a little confused here. I see this totally the opposite.

First there are "rules" in music. I'm not talking about "governing" rules, that set something either inbounds or out-of-bounds. The rules that apply to music are scientific and mathematical. Music is math and thus guided by the rules of mathematics...

I see these guys as following the rules very stringently in order to create this without it being just noise, which it isn't. It works because these guys are using the laws of music in such a way that it works..!

They obviously are more than some dudes who have some pretty good chops. The guitarists know there scales. Very obvious. They must understand the key signatures they are playing in or everything wouldn't sound the way it does.

This is very structured...!

My take anyway..!

Wow that was interesting... not bad but different. I thought it was cool though, but I wouldn't really want to listen to it.

BTW, does (most) rapping break the rules of music?

The "rules" of conformity that mainstream media has placed on us...

...seemingly no chord structure, atonality in most of their music, no verse-chorus-etc. structure, an emphasis on soloing, use of a Warr guitar (which is strange in itself), lack of highly repetitive moneybeat drum parts, no four-minute time limit...

...features of such strange artists.

Check out the mats/morgan band:

And planet X:

Then of course you have stuff like meshuggah and gojira. I personally tend to lean towards tonal music myself, but I love experimenting :D

If you like this stuff you might wanna check out some of the grind stuff (destroyer destroyer) as well as jazzdeath fusion (Sleep Terror is my favorite)

The guitarist of that band made a solo album called DIREWOLF.
It is EXCELLENT.

Blotted Science also has a member of behold the arctopus in it.

Other bands you might like? These are more collected than artocpus but will appeal to the same taste...

The number 12 looks like you

the dillinger escape plan

Iwrestledabearonce

Arsonists Get All the Girls

Genghis Tron

Mostly Other People Do the Killing

The Blood Brothers (more solid but still very unconventional)

Mr. Bungle, and Fantomas in specific for Mike patton cuts.
