I've had both (RIMS/snare stand), and I prefer a snare stand for my tom.
Less messing around to get the cymbal in the exact spot you want AND the drum in the exact spot you want IME.

I use the Pearl S-2000 with the adjustable basket (I use different size toms).
If you need to go real low on the tom, the S-1000 does that (use one for my snare).

The suspension grips don't choke the tom at all. The stand is rock solid, and your setting stay where you put them.

I use both depending on which kit I'm using...

Suspension mount on my Premier Gen-X kit... Snare stand on both my Ludwig kits. I think I actually prefer the snare stand as I'm not fond of the bouncy feeling of suspension mounts. Head changes are also more of a pain with the rims style mount.

I've never heard any significant loss in resonance from sitting the tom on the stand either - so I find that's the easiest option.

I've been using shell mounts for my kit for years, and I'm currently playing a suspension-mount kit at church. To my ear, there's just not that big a difference. I get more sustain from the church set's floor tom than from either set's rack toms.

There's a huge difference if the resonant head is tuned low...the weight of a drum on the bottom rim in a snare basket will detune the bottom head. If you tune medium or high on the reso head, though, there's not too much difference. Just don't clamp down the basket!
