Default Splashes and Hats

Ok so i have a few hi hat and splash questions

1. Im looking for a really percussive sounding splash cymbal, i dont really want any tone, kinda like a closed hi hat, what should i be looking at?
2. I was thinking of getting two 12" splashes to use as mini hi hats, would this mimic the effect of mini hats? I was probably gonna get 2 12" wuhan splashes, is this gonna sound like crap or good?

I recently started using Stagg cymbals, and the other day I tried coupling my two 8" splashes, they sounded GREAT. I did a sort of Zildjian K/Z thing, the bottom is a Myra (Brighter, thicker cymbal) and the top is a SH (Darker and thinner). If you have a Stagg dealer near your place, try this out, I was really crazy about the sound, maybe a 10" would work better as a hi hat though (But the 8" blew me away, so I'm not sure). Bear in mind you really have to hand pick these cymbals, they are not very consistent, so you might get a crappy or great cymbal for your money, depending on how you pick them, try as many as you can of the same model and size.

That's a coincidence. I take it you're talking about stacking but that's what I'm using for hats - SH on top and Myra on the bottom, just that they're 12".

Trashy when hit hard - but a nice trashy - and they can sound conventionally smooth when played gently. Agree that you need to be picky because some Staggs are ugly trashy like ZBTs rather than nice trashy. The good ones are great value for money.

No, no, as hats. What a coincidence, I mean, I was just messing around with my band playing with an 8" hi hat, but I actually loved the sound, so 10" or 12" must be even better for a mini hi hat.
And yeah, Stagg Splashes are quite trashy.

Check out Benny Greb's signature 12/14" Trash Hats on the meinl website or youtube. The top cymbals is a thin 12" splash with 4 small holes in it. The bottom is a slightly thicker 14" china with 4 bigger holes in it. The holes eliminate air lock when used with the foot pedal if you choose to use them as regular hats. Or do what Benny does and have them on the right side as an X-hat.

Alternatively, you can just get any old 2 cymbals and stack them in one way or another. Both upside down, one on the other, against each other like hi-hats. Experiment with different weights, sizes and cymbals to see what you like.

If you want more options, branch out into the crash and china side of life. I often put my Z Custom 16" crash under my old Paiste 101 as regular hats which i may use live sometime. Provides the wash that i really want from my hats as well as volume.

Again with crashes, try a 16" crash over an 18" china. Very trashy, very washy, very unique.

The drum kit is a lab. Mix different potions and see what you concoct!

I use a 12" Radiant XL splash over a 12" Paiste 400 splash on an x-hat for a hi-pitched, trashy hat sound. My advice is try it out in the store before you buy it. I had my Paiste splash for years, then took it to a drum shop and tried dozens of splashes until I found something that was what I wanted.
